“Deathfire”

By Cpt ObVus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

This guy says, “After you are destroyed, before you are removed, you may perform an attack and drop or launch 1 device.”

This attack is not explicitly referred to as a “bonus attack.” So if, earlier in the round, Deathfire had used Cluster Missiles on a target, with a bonus attack at a second target, and then he was later killed, would he be able to make a third attack before being removed? And I’m less familiar with the device rules, but does his ability allow you to exceed the limit on those (if any)?

this is a popular subject. bonus attacks are limited to one per round (except for huge ships). all attacks not performed as your one attack when you engage during the engagement phase are considered to be bonus attacks.

dropping or launching devices are normally limited to one per round, but that's only if it's stated on a card, such as genius.

cards that let you drop or launch a device other than the one you get to drop during the systems phase are not limited by the one device per round limit, unless they explicitly state so.

Ok, so clearly they’ve answered on the device front. But all of the “bonus attack” cards I’ve seen specifically say “perform this as a bonus attack” or something similar... except Deathfire. Kind of seems like they’re making a specific effort to have him worded differently... or is this just FFG being FFG and wording things oddly for no reason?

Its just FFG being FFG, we know this due to the following ruling:

Q: Is Han Solo [Rebel, Gunner ]’s additional attack a bonus attack?

A: Yes. Anything that permits an attack outside of the standard attack allowed to a ship when it engages is a bonus attack.

So the takeaway is: Don’t put Cluster Missiles on Deathfire! Got it. Thanks everyone.

Technically speaking (now with the rules change), its only limited to once per system phase. Not per round.

Why not? It just opens up your options.

Deathfire is Initiative 2, so the chance of him being destroyed before he attacks are higher. And even if you dont use the bonus attack from cluster missiles, its still a 3 dice attack (vs 2 primary) with 4 charges. And Deathfire isn't restricting what attack you can perform. Depending on initiative, he could get two main cluster missile attacks off in the round he is destroyed.

it's the other way around. with the original rules, it was one per systems phase. with the new rules, it's one per round. or at the moment, i dare say it's both.

from RR page 9, under Device:

and page 33, under Specific Card Questions:

might be that all of this changed several times. i can't be bothered to look it up, though. it's not relevant.

Nope. Earlier rules it was once per round. Due to all the debates with Paige and Deathfire, FFG changed it to once per system phase. It was changed in Rules Reference 1.0.5 (9/18/19).
