Sleeves- why?

By CinnaWolf, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

Yes it’ll protect them, but it’s not like they’re gonna be worth anything?

So why waste upwards $10 on sleeves for worthless cards?

Worthless? Worthless?! WORTHLESS?!?!?! W-O-R-T-H-L-E-S-S?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Seriously though, cards are an important part of the game, even if they eventually will be replaced by phone apps. But they are also easy to damage, especially if you have many of them and you shuffle them around. The damage deck is particularly important because there is no other way to replace it at the moment other than buying a new core set. And you use them every time you play the game. So you definitely want to protect them, especially if you want to play this game for many years.

Sleeves also makes it easier to shuffle and pick those cards in my opinion.

Plus keep in mind that, like everything, this game will become vintage at some point and it's gonna worth more with its cards intact.

True, true.
But the whole “it’ll become vintage” really won’t mean anything I feel

Plus I paint my models so if even they are mine would be worthless

I sleeved my Second Damage Deck, because the general wear and tear from using my deck just in regular games were making some cards Identifyable.

If nothing else, alt arts and damage deck should be sleeved.

Alt arts because they have value and a limited supply.

Damage deck because you are one spill away from eBay-hunting or buying a new core set.

I sleeve all my cards for most of my games. The only games I don't sleeve are the ones I rarely play because then it's not worth it.

I realize that Armada doesn't require us to handle our cards as much as some other board games, but for years I shared my ships and cards with my friends, and I'd really resent them if they damaged any of my cards, so I sleeved them all for my peace of mind.

Besides, sleeves aren't very expensive. When I'm spending $150 on the Starhawk and Onager, an extra $3 for 50 mini-sleeves hardly matters.

I also sleeve everything, especially the damage deck - makes it much easier to shuffle. I also put a small white adhesive dot on every front/text side. That way i can tell which cards are mine, without violating any rules about marking the cards.

I was also considering putting a sticker/adhesive to each of my cards, for identification. What happens when you stack them together, does the stack of cards become lopsided because of the stickers?

Well, I'm not so sure about that. Looking at them long enough, I would certainly learn to notice the subtle differences in the pacing of those adhesives.... :P

Just to clarify - the sticker is on the front side, you will only see it when the card is already showing the crit. So no use for Dodonna or boarding teams. I did check that beforehand... ;)

I use regular small office supply stickers. They are very thin and barely noticable, especially when using sleeves (which already make the stack of cards taller). I also use an acrylic damage deck holder (cog'o'2, the one for sleeved cards), everything still fits perfectly.

Would it be better to sticker the sleeves? That way you're not altering the original cards....

I thought that was what he’s saying.
