Playing SW Online during Outbreak

By Ogrebear, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

With the Virus spreading around my players and I have decided not to meet physically for a while, and therefore move our StarWars game online, however I have zero experience of running a game electronically and am therefore asking here for some advice please.

I have heard of tools like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds- Which is better for Edge of the `Empire? or is there another VTT system you would recommend?

Or just keep it to an audio/video feed?
Any thoughts on dice rollers?

Thank you for any comments/suggestions.

I prefer Fantasy Grounds + Skype for all the games that are supported by Fantasy Grounds. Roll20 isn't a bad second choice in a pinch though.

I have a game on Monday. How quickly does Fantasy Grounds setup? Also, how do I add the Star Wars Modules to it?

The other question is aroun dice and dice manipulation - one of my players can turn rolled dice to other facings, but I haven't found any way to be able to do this.

Roll20 seems really good, but doesn't support this dice system. Any ideas?

That's simple enough. Here's an example:

Light 'em up! : 3eP+2eB+1eC+1eD+1eS 2 successes, 2 threat, 1 Triumph
p--.png p-s.png p-tr.png b-s-a.png b--.png c-th-th.png d-f-th.png s--.png

Player: I can change two dice faces, so I'll turn the blank Proficiency into a Triumph (changing result to 3s,2t,2T), and the blank Boost into two Advantage (changing result to 3s,2T). Final result: 3s,2T

vanlevy.com has a great dice roller, and Roll20 does All The Things. Keep it simple, and happy gaming!

Friends and Nemeses http://nemeses.xyz/gaming/phpBB3/index.php has a setup already for Play by Post if anyone is interested.

Contact Swrider on there. Dice Rollers are included.

Is this free? I am trying to set up a game, and am happy to use a Zoom account and do Theatre of the Mind and share a bunch of images there, but Dice roling is my one hang up, and I don't want to have to mess with Roll20 just to get a dice roller. If this were PF or D&D, I wouldn't care. I roll behind teh screen at the table, and I trust my players to roll their dice and tell me what's what. But for this system I think that seeing teh roll and interpreting it in view of everyone is important. Finally, most of teh players in this campaign will be new to the system, and they are going to need some help reading the dice.

I am trying Discord tomorrow, by text I guess. Anyone with experience on the voice chat side? Does it support the dice too?

There's a neat Discord Diceroller Bot for FFG RPG D1-C3 I think it was.
You'll find it if you google for it ;)

Haven't used it in an actual session myself but I'm planning to.
In testing it did a really great job.

I've got that. How do I use it in voice, or can I?

Set up a game rolls channel. Add the dice bot to that channel. Speak voice in the voice channel

Oh but of course. 🙂

If you're fine with voice only, i can strongly recommend discord with rpg sessions

the rpg sessions bot can keep track of characters initiative, dice rolls, ships, etc

Me and mine have also stopped meeting in person, so we've purchased Tabletop Simulator with the SW RPG TABLE game.

Has so much you could ever need, dice and the ability to roll them and have the results read for you. Interactive character sheets with an area for each player, along with cheat sheets for quick info. Stock maps or ways for you to upload them. A soundboard for different soundtracks and ambience. Environmental effects such as rain and fog. Theres a whole area for the GM with dice, counters, cards. You can introduce fog of war. There are Minatures that you can load in if that's what you want.

It really feels like you're at the table. Though you do have to buy it.

I used roll20 for the game and discord for voice chat.

We wound up playing over Zoom last weekend. The results were less than sastifying than in person, but crackheads gotta get their fix so whatchay gonna do. Next weekend I might set up the lights I use for my youtube show, even out the lighting and make me not look like a cadaver.

I was looking at this. How does it work. Any pointers you can give?

This.

I have tried out several Star Wars FFG RPG Sets from the Tabletop Simulator Workshop but haven't found one that is bug free / usable.

Could you provide the name of the one you're using?

Cheers 😃

@tank0625 @Fl1nt

Certainly,

So the Mod we are using is called 'SW RPG TABLE'

So far it's been relatively bug free, although there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to learning all the different things you can do with it. Really anything is possible with it which makes it an amazing tool.

A good way to get started is watch XPgamers on YouTube. He gives an introduction to the game and the things you can do with it. Super informative.

Thanks alot, I will definitely give it a look 😃

Thank you for the info

To echo others, our regular gaming group used Discord for our first online gaming session this past weekend. The D1-C3 bot works well for dice rolls and keeping track of the Destiny pool. (It can be used for much more, but this is all we needed.) We have a voice channel for chatting plus a an actual play text channel for dice rolls, images, NPC names, and other in-game information. It works pretty slick. Since Star Wars/Genesys uses abstract range, it works very well for theater of the mind. If we wanted more tactical play with maps, minis, etc., I would consider using Roll20.

In the past, I have used Google Hangouts for another RPG, and it works well. We rolled physical dice for everything, and I kept track of all the pertinent information on a Google Spreadsheet that was shared with the group. I shared my screen to display images and other material. It also works well enough.

Finally, when I was playing in a live-play RPG podcast, we used Skype for voice and a Slack channel for dice rolls and information sharing. This also works for theater of the mind play.

Can you give a link to XPgamers. I looked but not sure what videos I should watch. Thank you
