How do you play Pathfinders???

By drail14me, in Star Wars: Legion

I’m still new to the game. Only a hand full of games under my belt. Just two of us in my local area. My friend is a hard core Imperial so I try to play Rebels to keep the table somewhat thematic.

I’m wanting to run two squads of Pathfinders with Bistan and Pao.

1. How would you equip them?

2. How do you manage all the Suppression and still get Actions?

3. Any tips on strategy and game play with them?

Thanks for any info!

What I do with Pathfinders is forget they have Infiltrate and focus on keeping them at long range as they have a good range 4 attack and better range 3 than most imperial units. Duck and cover is great for helping keeping them alive longer and for the suppression, it's good to have Leia or some commander that can help them keep suppression under control (Pao also can help your other Pathfinder unit with that).

I'm sure there's a skilled player that has figured them out but I tried and tried and never got them to work well for me even though I really wanted to. I would use INFILTRATE to get them close and before I could use any danger sense or dauntless they would get completely deleted. They were usually the first unit to be wiped out.

I also tried but not as many times using them as a stand-off gun line with the A-300 long range config and Pao so you have a range 4 unit and stay behind cover but it wasn't long before they got suppressed and wiped out

Only use infiltrate if you have a really REALLY good opportunity, like if there is an objective surrounded by a bunch of LoS blocking terrain.

There will be a blog article on this.

Stay tuned

What does Leia do to help them with suppression? What should I look for in a commander to help Pathfinders?

The Inspire abbility because it helps you to remove suppression. Leia has Inspire 2, and you will already have Pao which has Inspire 1.

Deploy first if you're gonna grab a box and run.

Deploy last if you wanna hit a flank. Take recon intel to pop people at range 3 from turn 1.

Try to pick on little units that can't do more than a hit or two past cover. A full size line infantry squad is just gonna drop 6 hits on you and not care about your extra white die or two.

all of this and more is discussed in the upcoming blog article. It isn't my blog I am guest writing on this one https://rebelsguide.home.blog/2020/03/16/jyn-erso-analysis/

The one on Pathfinders is written and submitted you should see it in the next couple days.

Thanks. Now I need to get on TTS and give Pathfinders a try. 😁

Inspire X can't be used on the unit with the keyword that is "Inspiring," just so you know.

I also prefer to think of them mainly as a rebel squad with range 4. I finally painted a squad of them and they added some cool variety to my army.

I always deploy them directly onto my storage shelf...

I've used them as proxies for my veterans.

Lately I've used them without any upgrades but duck and cover and the free gun upgrade. I use them as longrange sniper hunters/suppression pushers or just have them sneak around and grab objectives by putting their pistols on and standby'ing to get free attacks or moves.

Infiltrate is usually a trap unless your opponents ignore them. With no Pao, they are more easily ignored.

Am I understanding their attack choices correctly for a full basic squad:

Native A-300 range 1-3 with two white die per mini For a total of 8 white dice.

A-300 in Short range config gives one red die at range 1-2 for 4 total red die.

A-300 in Long range config gives one white die per mini for a total of 4 white die from range 1-4.

So, add in Bistan with an attack at range 3 using the native A-300 for a total of 12 white dice and one black???

Yes. Keep in mind that Bistan exhausts though.

If Bistan’s heavy weapon is exhausted, can he still contribute 2 white die with an A-300 squad attack?

12 white dice

Do two core sets even include that many? Haven't bought in yet but this sounds fun.

No. Three of each die per core set. 😕

I’ve got two core sets and a dice pack for a total of 9 of each die. Guess I need another pack 😁

Not a top player, so grain of salt

1. How would you equip them?

I like bistan for just throwing a lot of dice downwind. Duck and cover is a life saver. I took HQ up-link since I had to spend the occasional action to Recover anyway, it is nice having an order on them at the right time. Pao ait bad either, especially if I am keeping them close to another suppressible shooter.

2. How do you manage all the Suppression and still get Actions?

With 2 courage and 4 range, it did not come up too often. I was doing the occasional recover action or using dauntless to fall back and shoot. A character nearby with inspire helps, but recover actions usually do the job.

3. Any tips on strategy and game play with them?

Like others have said, Infiltrate is strictly an attack of opportunity. It can be nice to get that first hit in, but I hate to leave any unit unsupported for long. If you do infiltrate, remember you can retreat. There is no shame in the rebellion.

Hope this helps a little.

Yup, he still has access to all the other weapons available to the unit.

I know, but Pao can help the other Pathfinder unit with Inspire. The OP mentioned he was thinking on running 2 units of Pathfinders.
