Unit Upgrade Expansion?

By Dansome1, in Star Wars: Legion

Which of the four unit upgrade expansions provides the most to their respective armies?

I collect all four armies, but I'm not sure if I want to get them all (or which ones to get multiples of).

Even better, how would you rank them?

Clones probably have the best expansion. The weapons are great, and the specialist is a hybrid of both the Rebel and Imperial versions. Captains are the same for every faction.

Droids come in second. The radiation gun is an expensive (for B1s), but powerful weapon that is particularly effective against commanders/operatives. The sniper gives you critical 1 which is massive for the large dice pools that B1s have. The two support personnel exist to make your AI less bad. If you're having a good game they won't help much, but they're nice to have when it hits the fan.

Empire is third. The RT-97C is a good sidegrade to the DLT, but the T-21 can be a little lackluster in comparison. Note that the T-21 does better against units in cover than it's competitors. The specialist is...okay. The free aim is nice, but the empire doesn't struggle to get aims in the first place.

Rebels got shafted pretty hard here. The DLT-20 is fine, but that's about it. The other weapon is a short range anti armor weapon, but if you're getting that close just take impact grenades. The specialist isn't stellar. The free dodge will probably be the only time you get to use nimble so there's that.

I only play Droids, so I can only speak well for how I view them. I find the radiation gun very underwhelming. The extra cost and reduced range is too much of a deterrent to take when combined with this squad getting focused. The sniper rifle is good, and it competes with the original weapons well. The OOM series droid is also great for flexibility as it allows for longer coordinate chains, but the security droid is super situational. I don't often find myself in a position where I can't get orders on a unit, and if I do, the forced attack isn't a deal breaker. Overall, it is worth it to get a box or two.

In a world in which B2s exist, yeah the radiation gun is a lot less useful. However they're a pain to get a hold of while the personnel packs aren't. If you need a short range deterrent against lightsabers/dewbacks and to a lesser extent Tauntauns it can work well in a pinch if you're tight on points.

I think they’re all about the same. They each come with 1 weapon that is kinda useful. I like the DLT for the rebels more than most. It gives them a range 4 weapon (something they don’t have a lot of) and it gives the unit crit 1, which is more useful than most realize. I wish it had a red or was a bit cheaper, but beggars can’t be choosers. The only reason I think it’s not as popular is that rebels players usually just play min units of core troops.

I think the RT for stomtroopers is solid as well, but they already have one of the best heavy weapons. I don’t think you can go wrong with the DLT or RT.

I think both the clone weapons are ok, but I’d probably still go with the DC15. I think they got the best trooper specialist overal (security droid is also really good).

As for the droids, the sniper rifle seems decent and gives you that range 4, but I’m not sure I’d run any heavy weapon with B1. The security droid is also a solid, as is the OOM. I prefer the security, it’s situational, but for only 3 points it can be handy. If you don’t need it then the game is probably already going well. I prefer Dooku, and there’s going to be some turns where you can order chain.

Oooo gotta disagree the dp23 is a very good weapon, and if you are hunkering down the RPS is good depending on your meta

Speaking as a CIS and rebel player.

Clones, I think is very good, but I haven't faced enough yet.

Empire got decent options, but nothing must have IMO. Unless shoretroopers get a point increase, your are better or buying more shoretroopers honestly.

CIS is a pretty good one. The weapons are both useful with the sniper being long range without the stupid exhaust, adding critical wich increases damage beyond the standard heavy. Radiaton cannon might be a one off, and got short range. It does have good dice and poison which is great vs characters and red saves. OOM commander is okey if you don't run the OOM in tank just to get a bit more flexibility in spreading the order change, again prob max 1. The sequrity droid feels a bit pointless except for a radiation cannon unit that MIGHT wander out of coordinating range.

The rebels well...you got the dlt rifle which is great. It works alot like the CIS sniper with a nice range 4 poke and better dmg than Z-6 at range 3 as long as you haven't lost too many troopers. The shotgun is like the radiation cannon except you get the keyword impact wich is almost pointless on trooper squad that can take an ion range 3 gun instead. It does have the best average hits of the rebel trooper weapons, but when you got fleet troopers that does so much better dmg at range 2 I don't see a point for this gun. It needs a new keyword or reduction of 3-5 points. Rebel captain is interesting, training slot with a 4 point tax, plus a nice ability for late game obj capture. Specialist is 4p above a trooper and gives you a almost useless extra gear slot. Exhaust for one dodge is pretty meh, but maybe the surge token on a Z-6 squad would help.

I feel like CIS and Clones prob got either nice weapons and/or personel options. Empire and Rebels got guns that are either meh or a potential slight upgrade with personell that is very situational.

CIS:

I used to think that the Security Droid would be awesome - saving up HQ Uplink and the extra B1 droid! But then... They're only really useful in units that stay far from others (which you don't wanna do), so meh.

I can see OOM's uses, but for now I really don't need it (I keep B1s close to each other).

The sniper has been a bit underwhelming for me. Rolling 8 whites is still bad.

Finally, the Rad Cannon is doing some heavy duty in my lists - but B2s will retire it.

Sadly, the worst thing from the pack is not being able to make a full B1 unit, unlike the other 3 packs.

I’d rather spend the 4 extra points for the DC-15 over the RPS. The crit on a unit that doesn’t surge is very important. One of the reasons the shore’s heavy is so good. I think the DP-23 has some potential, I would consider running 1, but I still think the clone’s best heavy is the DC-15. I wish P2s could run the DP-23.

Right but if your in a vehicle meta the RPS is a great option
