New FAQ (v1.7)

No new taboos. That's a bit interesting.

I think Matt said on one of the FFG Live streams that they only plan to update the Taboo list in between cycles, so that people in the middle of the new campaign don’t have to worry about what to do with their decks.

Which I suppose makes the question: “Why didn’t they wait until after the last Mythos pack released to update the FAQ?”

Still, I’m not complaining. The updates/clarifications are welcome.

Most of the changes are obvious fixes (e.g. the Winchester) or simple clarifications (yes, the Myriad discount also carries over to Standalone, even though they're worded differently), or things that were already confirmed and now put into the FAQ for everyone to see (maintaining legal deck size and bonded card limits). Good to see they realised there was a lot of missing info for Before the Black Throne.

The clarification on "As if" is surprising - I was shocked it would be that permissive. Luke Robinson has gone from excellent to potentially overpowered. But at least it is relatively straightforward and consistent!

Automatic success and failure has been a long time coming, with a number of "automatically evade" and "automatically succeed" effects in the core set - I am not that surprised at the outcome, even though it contradicts some prior rulings. Based on the FAQ, the Stray Cat indeed does nothing against the Watcher from Another Dimension. The clarification of when you do and do not draw tokens for an automatic success is a welcome one as there was previously some rather confusing rules text around the matter.

Roll on that taboo list!

Are you supposed to reveal the location Luke targets for his event? Otherwise how could he play it "as if" being there?

Locations only reveal when you enter them. Most effects don't actually require the location to be revealed to work there (e.g. Barricade, Dynamite Blast). Some can even end up with clues on them before they're revealed due to various effects (for example, if Luke plays Forewarned he could use his ability to decide where the clue lands).

His ability works once per turn, so it can't be used in the Mythos phase.

But he can Delve, among other encounter draws.

So I guess he can leap across locations on Essex County, wow

That's an interesting thought. Every train car has "you cannot enter Train Car unless all of the clues on the location to its left have been discovered." If the location to the left is unrevealed, have they all been discovered? I'd be willing to bet on a simple errata to make that not work since he would trivialize the entire scenario (with a card that starts in play no less).

He cannot enter unrevealed locations from his gate box, so that isn't a concern.

However, the ability to leapfrog using his ability and Shortcut would still work; he'd end up using Shortcut from the adjacent (unrevealed) location to access the subsequent (also unrevealed) location. Powerful in solo, otherwise more of a gimmick because your friends can't come with you.

But once he does so he can run back down the train, and wouldn't be blocked from entering the intermediate locations, revealing and unlocking them. The rest of the team would have to clear the clues off the starting location, but that would be the only one (unless they had to enter another due to time).

No, he can only leapfrog one location by using Shortcut as if he were at a connecting location, since the Train Cars are only connected to the locations to their left and right.

He can't skip all the way to the far end of the train with it. So that still leaves the unrevealed intermediate location inaccessible (until all the clues on its left have been revealed) and the subsequent location inaccessible (until Luke's new location has been cleared). It's overpowered and should be fixed, since it bypasses one location's worth of investigation, but I don't see that it completely breaks the scenario.

Gotcha - I had thought that Dream Gate connected to all locations revealed or not. Have yet to play with him, and my understanding was incomplete. Apologies!
