Five rounds of Swiss plus three rounds of cuts makes for a super long day.
I was at one tournament and we did four rounds of Swiss but 1/2 of the 3-1 people didn’t make it - it didn’t seem fair. Is there a better way?

Most players won't qualify for the cut, so 5 rounds of swiss seems reasonable to give everyone a fair dose of X-wing for their money.
If you make the cut, it is a long day, but that's half the point of a tournament.
There are people out there still trying to fit these into one day?
In my local area, we haven't had a single-day Store Champ (or above) for years . Moving the top cut to the next day is easier on just about everyone.
Edited by DR4COThe cut should be on the next day but most folks cannot make the next day for a store champ. Maybe do 4 rounds with cut?
Amen on being too long

Pretty much every Store Championship I've seen in the UK has been a single day event, so certainly here one day seems to be the norm. Agreed that 8 rounds of X-Wing is too much to fit into a single day, but people just aren't keen on splitting events over two days unless it's Regional/Prime level or above.
The Store Championship closest to me was only 18 players, which gave us 4 rounds of Swiss (reasonable) but still a top 8 cut (which seemed a little odd).
Our store champ was 5 rounds with a top 4 cut, so the top players played 7 games, but everyone else got 5 or 6.
Another UK store champ this weekend ran 24 players for 4 rounds into a top 8 cut, which to me makes no sense at all - just play 5 rounds / top 4.
If you start at 9:30 and run promptly, you should be done with Swiss by dinner time, and done with the full tournament by 9/10 pm.
It is a long day, but two day events open a whole new dynamic / demographic of players who can / cannot attend.
Running 'regionals' (Prime) in a single day is the other side of the coin. Upwards of 64 people means at least 5 if not 6 rounds of swiss. If you try to cram that into a day along with cut, you have two people there until gone midnight.

I think this is closer to the ideal. Either 5 rounds with a cut to top 4 or 4 rounds with a cut to top 8. 5 with top 4 cut seems best though.
Greater than 7 rounds of play seems excessive for anything not premier level.
Edited by 5050SaintAs I heard it, the guidelines is 16+ players = 4 rounds, cut to top 8. Which is certainly too long for 1 day, if you go all the way to top 4. That's how ours ran on Saturday at least.
But 1 day is the norm. 5 rounds with cut to top 4 makes sense. But is still kinda long.
I can cope with 6 games in a day, which is cool, because I'll likely never make the final in our area
Y'alls TOs are either using the wrong tournament bracket for store champ level events or have just completely gone rogue
yeah - we were 40 on the nose so we ran 5 rounds into top 4 as intended... There was a brief moment when we thought we would have 41 players, necessitating an extra round of cut, but someone no-showed on the morning.
People running 4 rounds into top 8 are just doing whatever they want I guess.
Our store does what it wants honestly. Which is fine because it’s based on our input.
We normally do 4 Swiss cut to top 4
I normally plug for 3 Swiss cut to top 4...
Sometimes we do. Only on a world’s invite do we follow the letter of the law on the organization.

When my local store received their Store Champs kit (slated for the second weekend of April, looking increasingly unlikely to run), the documents within specified that a Store Championship uses the Advanced Structure, not the basic. That means for a 24 man event, you'd get 4 round Swiss, Top 8 cut.

huh, really?
that's a novel change, then, and a weird one at that

Just FFG being FFG and forgetting their own tournament guidelines I guess

Yeah, it had us surprised as well. Amusingly, when we asked FFG if they minded if we ran 4 Swiss, top 4 cut, they said that that was fine.

You're going Rogue too, mate.
In the Store Champ kit it says that we should be using the advanced Tournament structure.

Dems da rules doe.
I like them short and sweet. 4 rounds cut to top 4. I think anything more gets a little crazy for store champs. Primes should be the ones you need some endurance for.
Our Store Champs has a cap of 16 players.
It also has a time limit based on when it's open.
So we will run 4 rounds without any top cut.
(Unless virus yada yada intervenes.)

While it may be considered going rogue, this is my intended structure locally. Whenever the event happens, anyway. Date being considered for rescheduling....

If a store cannot or will not allow enough time to play the number of rounds mandated by the rules FFG has set out for Store Championships, then they should not run one.

You all complained they were too long, now you don’t get any more until fall. you got what you asked for; they’re a lot shorter now
I got my store champ in before the pandemic - we literally played it out on Saturday despite the virus because cdc guidance because we were under the 50 cap (32 + TO + streamer + store employee). Just was smart about it and didn’t eat or touch your own face without a thorough decontamination.
New meaning to “in before the lock”.
