TIE Bomber, TIE Punisher, U-Wing, Resistance Bomber

By Cpt ObVus, in X-Wing

Have these ships seen 2.0 releases yet? Are they decent? Worth hunting them down and getting conversion kits for?

Resistance bomber is for the Resistance faction, so whether you want to get one depends on if you will be collecting that faction.

It's fun but rarely used at the moment due to its high points cost when loaded up.

Tie Bombers are superb in 500pt games using a wing of them. Also they're ok as chunkier TIE Fighters to take a while to die. Fully loaded up, they become less effective for their points so you either take bombs or you take missiles or you take torpedoes.

Tie Punishers have 2 good pilots which play completely differently. Having one is a good idea.

Those 3 ships need the Conversion Kits to play them.

U-wings had 2 releases in 1st ed, the blue one hasn't been re-released but the one from Saw's Renegades came with cardboard and cards for both editions - the pilots in this aren't in the Rebel Conversion Kit so this is the pack to buy if you can find it.

Seconding that Saw's Renegades is worth grabbing - as well as the U-Wing it includes a T-65 with a fancy paintjob and extra pilots and upgrades for both ships.

The Resistance Bomber is certainly very different to the other Resistance ships, but doesn't seem to see a lot of play at the moment. Also note that Resistance is a separate faction to Rebels.

The TIE Punisher and Bomber have both seen a fair amount of play in second edition (although points changes have made them less popular than they were). They are definitely worth getting if you have a conversion kit and want to use torps and/or bombs as an Imperial player. I'm not sure I'd buy the conversion kit for just those two ships, but if you're planning to pick up more 1.0 Imperial ships as well the conversion kit is reasonably priced. Sometimes even when ships have been released in 2.0 it's cheaper to buy the 1.0 version if you've already got the conversion kit, so it's a pretty good investment if you're going to build a large collection. Also comes with lots of upgrades.

He's on point with that. Conversion kits are for a collection of 1.0 ships. These are the number of maneuver dials you get in a Empire conversion kit.

Quote

Galactic Empire Conversion Kit

3 – Alpha-class Star Wing
3 – Inquisitor’s TIE
2 – Lambda-class Shuttle
2 – TIE Advanced
3 – TIE Aggressor
3 – TIE Bomber
2 – TIE Defender
4 – TIE Fighter
3 – TIE Interceptor
2 – TIE Phantom
2 – TIE Punisher
3 – TIE Striker
2 – VT-49 Decimator

As to the resistance bomber Resistance ships were Rebel in 1st and First Order were Empire in 1st. Both are now their own factions.

Saw's Renegades (U-wing and T-65) is in 1st Ed. packaging but contains 2nd Ed. components for use in either edition of the game.

@Ysenhal is right that none of the ships alone is worth getting a conversion kit for. If there's more stuff you want, it can be worth it.

U-Wing: Solid. I think the pilots in the Rebel Conversion Kit for it are better than the Saw's pilots, but the Saw's pilots are decent. As others have noted, getting the Saw's Renegades pack alone is enough. Maybe supplement with a Rebel Conversion Kit later, maybe just use crew out of the Millennium Falcon expansion

TIE Bomber: a solid filler ship, does some cool stuff, but it's not that hard to just skip. That said, they are cheap on Amazon right now.

TIE Punisher: Redline is sweet, but can probably be skipped unless you see a decent deal. The style of ordnance gameplay is nearly unique in Empire (Starwing can kinda do it, but Starwings are ridiculously overpriced on the secondary market), so it's a fun ship.

Resistance Bomber: It's not really worth it. If it's cheap, and you already are getting into Resistance and have the Resistance Conversion Kit to get Rey and the Falcon, might not be terrible to grab one, but last place.

None of them except for the Saw’s Renegades hybrid wave - this pack was the final 1.0 wave and wave 0 of 2.0 so it has 2.0 cards and cardboard as well.

The pilots aren’t the same but some of them are solid, and the ship is a great choice for rebel fleets. Lastly, you have a Uwing pilot coming in your hotshots and aces card pack you’ll want to play with: K2SO

The bomber and punisher can be, but I wouldn’t unless you’re tracking down more things to get a value out of the conversion box.

Resistance bomber run away unless you intend to expand to that faction. It’s a whole new faction for you. If you DO want to play that faction, go for it! The cost of the resistance bomber on amazon is low enough that it’s cheaper to buy that plus the resistance conversion kit than it would be to buy a reprinted version (which does not exist yet anyway). AND, you can now take that pretty falcon model you own and fly it for the resistance with conversion kit content. Then stock up on A pair of 1.0 t70s and call it good.

I ordered a Heroes of the Resistance 1.0 box, and a Resistance Conversion Kit last night. The Fireball looks like too much fun, so sooner or later, I’ll be expanding to the Resistance. Which probably also means First Order, at some point. I have very little love for the Prequel Trilogy, and the terrible fake-plastic-beards look of Clone Wars left me completely flat, so the only way I’m gonna end up expanding into CIS & Republic factions is if I get pretty much everything else and get bored. Or if they end up looking like a lot of fun; good gameplay trumps lore.

K-2SO is one of the reasons I’m curious about the U-Wing (I got the Hotshots pack yesterday). Does 2.0 have a card for Cassian yet?

Also, are they eventually bringing the TIE Bomber, Resistance Bomber, Ep7 Falcon, etc. into 2.0? Have they got an announcement/upcoming product list?

Well then, If you already have the conversion kit the resistance bomber online is so cheap to not pass up IMO. It’s not Uber competitive but it can be fun to play.

The Cassian 2.0 card exists solely in the rebel conversion kit right now. He’s solid, but there is a cost-value there and I’m not sure going back is worth it unless you find a good used lot of 1.0 ships to justify the kit.

K2 looks good to me in his own way. Magva Pilot (saw’s renegades) is also a neat support piece that de-buffs opponents reroll abilities. Saw pilot boosts your squad’s offense when they become damaged (have at least one damage card). The renegades box is worth it.

Yes, they will most likely bring them all into 2.0 reprints eventually. There is no estimate or announced plan: but I’d bet on longer/later rather than sooner especially for the punisher because it’s not a Disney canon ship. In fact, ffg said they were slowing down reprint into 2.0 because they weren’t moving as well because most players are still 1.0 consumers who converted. So, could be a while. Though the tie bomber feels like a likely reprint to be chosen because of its iconic status. Time will tell.
