2003 Clone Wars from Cartoon Network

By TauntaunScout, in Star Wars: Legion

Alright I finally managed to watch this show. It's really cool. My only complaint is the amount of plot-armor they gave Grievous. And y'know. "Darth" Tyrannus. I still hold that Darth shouldn't be a title. Being as that Obi-Wan had a a young pupil "named Darth Vader" and all.

This is the only pre-Vader Anakin stories that exist in my house going forward. My curated canon exists of the following moving pictures plus the West End sourcebooks:

  • 2003 Star Wars: Clone Wars
  • Solo (begrudgingly and with a high degree of suspicion)
  • Rogue One
  • The original Trilogy (duh)
  • The Mandalorian
  • The Last Jedi (See: Solo above)

All else is lumped in with Planet of the Hoojibs and the Ewok shows and stuff.

I think part of the reason it works so well, is it avoids the big trap of the prequels to begin with. It doesn't show the origin, or conclusion, of the Clone Wars, thus preserving the mystique that was a brand-defining aspect of Star Wars until 1999.

You don't like the clone wars TV show?

I always feel sad when someone would deprive another of the ability to watch something and make up their own mind. If your kids and/or significant other don't like the prequels (and by extension, the Clone Wars), that should be their decision, not yours.

Unless it's a house of one, in which case, sure. Not a big deal.

My kids are only allowed to watch Ghostbusters. No, not that one, the series from 1975.

It is too strange to look at all those talking polygons. I can’t watch it or Rebels.

Hey if they want to go watch them of their own accord. But I am not spending money or storage space on them. I don’t have time to go out of my way to personally show them everything else in the world. There’s too much content. I don’t own The Getalong Gang or Cannonball Run either. That doesn’t mean they’re being prevented from being fans of those.

Fair enough, the original post just read like "You can't listen to that in my house" to me, especially what with the accessibility of streaming services (I mean, access to the entirety of the actual star wars canon is about $7 per month right now). It's well within your right, but that's the sort of attitude that my grandfather had.

I tried to watch Episode I with them because they wanted to "see a Star Wars with Darth Maul in it". I hadn't seen it since 1999. I was pretty horrified. At their young impressionable age, I felt really uncomfortable exposing them to the (even if accidentally created) racial caricatures found in it. Won't be watching that again anytime soon.

We also tried to watch Episode II and III but the CGI and the acting is just unwatchable. I had to turn it off. It was like a "so bad, it's funny" thing, only, without the funny.

Not gonna pay $7 a month cause that adds up. I have DVDs or Bluray of the OT, R1, Ewoks, now Clone Wars ('03), and presumably eventually, SOLO, TLJ, and The Mandolorian. SOLO has kinda been growing on me. I guess I'll let it slide.

Also, this whole "two actors, one character" thing really is mind-breaking for very small children. They can't understand it very well. I remember being super confused about From Star Wars to Jedi at around that age. It showed a British actor as Jabba the Hutt. Also, the screenshots of Biggs and stuff from the center of the ANH novelization were puzzling when I was under 6 or so.

Anything else, they can get from the local library I guess. The LEGO Star Wars cartoons are cute, but hardly worth shelf space and obviously about as canon as the Ewok cartoon. Droids I do not yet own, and it's usually overpriced. Only way I'd get that is if I found a good copy at Salval or something someday.

My kids are toddlers, it's not like they should be watching a lot of tv anyways.

or Rebels

That's interesting.

While I agreed about the animation style of the Clone Wars animated series, I found rebels to be infinitely smoother and much more enjoyable to watch.

rebels had some really good moments in it. I shrugged it off until I got D+ for the mandalorian and I was blown away. I think I ended up watching it 4 or 5 times through. For me, it revived a lot of those feelings of Jedi mysticism that the clone wars and prequel movies had lost.

One or two episodes in the last season of rebels outright give me goosebumps still. lol

Wait, you think both Grievous and Dooku have a lot of plot armor, but a 6-minute long boring scene of Mace Windu destroying probably 10% of all B2s ever created BY HIMSELF is ok?!?

Lol.

That Grievous is MILES better than RotS/Clone Wars series. I wish Lucas never forced his change.

Yes but, only because we see Jedi doing these amazing things like levitating enemy fleets away. Then somehow Grievous is too much for them? How does that even work? Which is it? Why don't they just levitate away all his lightsabers or something?

When did that happen?

Also, the Jedi do all those amazing things and still get killed like absolute punks in mere seconds from their own troops? Something doesn't add up.

Now I want to watch Samurai Jack again...

It honestly reminds me of Liquid Television’s Aeon Flux.

Well for me the prequels never added up.

Re: Mace Windu killing 7,183 battle droids by punching them, I accept a lower threshold of realism for cartoons. Most people do, according to research.

Yeah, those og clone wars were the bomb. I imagine Tartakovsky was a big part of that. I would watch those and then think, "the movie jedi are pathetic; why can't they do cool stuff?"

Grievous was a completely new threat to the Jedi. They didn't know who - or what - he was and didn't know how to fight him well enough.

Also, a bunch of those Jedi in that scene were just padawans or knights - only the three survivors were Masters

You play a miniatures game that is (admittedly jokingly) referred to as more expensive than crack, but 7 bucks a month for Disney+ adds up?

I won't get $7 value of it most months. Considering what SW discs I already own, and that I don't have time to watch everything on the other streaming services I have.

If they really put up ALL of Star Wars I'd go for it. But they don't. They put up their "canon".

Being able to levitate objects is like Jedi 101, Grievous being made of mostly metal should have folded like a cheap chair in the first attempt to fight anyone with trained force powers.

That he not only survived, but wins is pure plot armor. Mace is described as one of the greatest lightsaber users of all time, so I’m willing to cut him some slack of defeating a bunch of droids.

I begrudgingly watch Clone Wars. As bad as some plots are, the characters are great.

Rebels, though, is excellent imho. It starts a bit hokey, but wow does it get good. End of season two (“Twilight of the Apprentice”) is some of the best episodes of tv I’ve seen.

It builds a beautiful bridge between Clone Wars and Rogue One; But, it does include Clone Wars characters that are less interesting without watching that series.

That style of animation burns my eyes. I guess I was scarred by Reboot.

Thats my one issue with the 2003 cartoon. Its beautifully made but the Jedi power level creep is crazy.

Going by the movies and canon series their use of the force is fairly restrained and subtle. Big, flashy acts are reserved for big moments.

ARC trooper story lines were the best. Whether it was the Muunilinst 10 or defence of Coruscant with Fordo wielding a blaster rifle and pistol taking down SBDs left, right and center. I just wish they had Clone Commandos in it too

I mean each unto their own... but your 'own' kinda really limits the universe. The best things the prequels did was make the universe bigger and more diverse (but yes, f*ck Lucas for making the Nymodians and Toydarians so **** racist).

And you are missing out on some of the hands down BEST Star Wars to date by not watching Rebels, sure season 1 is a touch rough, but after that it just goes all in with excellent stories and wonderful character development. (And you picked the worst movie from the sequel trilogy too... which is bad when it follows TFA, but without following TFA it will just be nonsense.) And the animation style... if that burns your eyes how can you watch any American animation? It's so much better than things like Teen Titans Go, or Home Movies, or BallMasters, or even Rick and Morty (I love the show, but one must admit the animation was never meant to be stunning).

And it's going to make things going forward get weird. Rumor has it that at least one Rebels character, if not more will make a major appearance in season 2 of the Mandalorian. Heck season 1 of the Mandalorian ended with a huge reveal that possibly, or even probably, meant almost nothing to you without watching Rebels (and the new Clone Wars). Does the Dark Saber hold any significance for you? Would you know anything about its origins, its arc, or its overall significance? Its reveal was filled with importance from those two shows, and without them... all it becomes is a fancy black colored saber, wow.

Wait, does your canon not include the new Thrawn books?
That's it, I'm out. Beyond help you are.
