Rumor Legion overtakes Xwing in sales

By Tirion, in Star Wars: Legion

Obviously I have no way of proving this, but I'm being told due to a number of factors, including lack of reprints, that legion is outselling Xwing.

Kinda makes sense as everything in legion is new while Xwing y you can just buy the conversion kits and then keep up with the newness. While avoiding the shops that have 1,0 equivalents.

Also heard their margin on legion is WAY higher compared to Xwing and they are saving a nice chunk of change by having us do the sprues now compared to when they did it for us with the soft plastic.

But yeah go us, we are number 1.

Well, if true, would mean the game is fairly "safe" for the time being.

All others, are 2 or more.

I don’t know about other areas, but x-wing skyrocketed in my area when 2.0 came out, and now it’s completely dead. We’d have close to 20 people playing on weeknights, and now maybe 1 game at most.

The hard plastic sprues being cheaper makes sense. A mold is a mold and plastic resin is dirt cheap. Make a sprue, toss it in the bag, done. X Wing's problem is, everyone already owns much of the stuff they are putting out. They are counting on people wanting to play new factions and a slightly improved model over the old one for sales at increased prices. Not actually a winning strategy. Also, Legion players buy more stuff at higher prices. An X wing player might buy 2 $20 ships while a Legion player will buy 3 $30 units. Legion can make more money with fewer people and at higher margins.

X Wing was also a gate way game for their other games. Nice painted models, sold at major retailers, and a simple enough game. The low margins on those $15 ships made sense. That has changed over the years and FFG has fewer games now so the gateway game doesn't really lead anywhere.

Same, there was some buzz when 2.0 came out and now it's pretty dead.

My LGS is small and rural and by no means representative of larger trends, but Legion has an active player base here while X-Wing has dried up. I know that I have not only stopped purchasing X-Wing, but hardly play X-Wing. My LGS has stopped carrying X-Wing and only does special orders. We probably have fewer Legion players than we did X-Wing at it's peek, though.

X-Wing 2.0 really split the community here, though. Some players switched while others didn't, which just added a layer of complication not everyone wanted to deal with. Being a small, rural area, the LGS couldn't support both groups. Armada probably has a stronger presence at my LGS than X-Wing at this point. They still hold the occasional tournament for Armada, which they aren't for X-Wing.

Having no interest in space ship games, my outside perspective is that Armada will be continue to be played for decades after X-Wing is gone, by a loyal few. Like Mordheim still is.

That is not dead which can eternal lie.

I've been playing X-Wing since the 2.0 inception, while for Legion I waited until October for the CW launch. And I'll tell ya: I've been having more fun with Legion in these 5 months than the almost 2 years with X-Wing.

I mean, Armada has gone a year and a half without new releases and isn't dead. It's like the camel of gaming communities in that it just wanders on regardless of how much attention is paid to it.

They trained is early wave 1 maybe it was wave 2 but the first new ships were 6 months late. And we have had year gaps between even being acknowledged

The only truth is that Armada is an old god.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Armada Minnesota wgah'nagl fhtagn.

But legion is dead, no?

Or, for a more direct comparison, Battlefleet Gothic. I saw two people playing it at my FLGS a couple of weeks ago. One person had filled out their fleet from eBay, the other utilized 3D printing.

The x-wing base at my FLGS decreased a bit with 2.0 but is surging. Some were turned off by the cost of switching to 2.0--I still don't play rebels or resistance, but we have some new players.

While they fixed some stuff with 2.0, there are still plenty of problems. That they expected people to re-purchase barely improved ships, when most players had poodu load of ships, is one of them.

I'm still having fun playing x-wing though, so I wouldn't count it out yet.

Give it a few years... X-Wing 3.0. 😳 😆

Before that we will have the Legion 2.0 for sure, with cards pack to buy

There is an interview on Team Covenant with Asmodee NA head of publishing where he says they have X-Wing, Armada, Legion expansive game line plans approved by Lucasfilm Licensing through 2023. Also apparently Imperial Assault is not dead?

As far as we know they are not intending to release any new physical products but they will keep developing new campaigns and such for the app.

not shocked... the new ships that release for x-wing are in such limited stock it makes legion look plentiful. When stores are ordering in 30 ships and getting 5.... ya sales may not be as high as they could be. (that is all before corona). There are local people here that still do not have ships from a release almost a year ago.

No products available = no sales.

That being said legion is well on its way to having no product available (even worse then x-wing here in Canada as we did not even receive B2's and sabers)

FFG desperately needs to get its supply chain fixed or they are going to torpedo there own games. No one wants to play a game they cant get product for.

I feel like for a majority of Armada players, not only is it their favorite game, it’s their favorite by a large margin. Anecdotal, of course.

I would vote no to this. I probably haven't played in 15+ months and haven't misses it. Imperial Assault skirmish on the other hand, I miss quite a bit.

Someone seriously mis-estimated the need for xwing players to repurchase ships. There's an excess of used ships and there is no real advantage other than optics to purchase previously released ships for x wing. They have admitted as such and basically cancelled and rebooted the x wing game production. They are only going to release new ships from now on(which is what they should have done) so no surprise that x wing is flagging in sales
