Combined X-wing, Armada, and Legion Campaign

By ForcePushed, in Star Wars: Legion

My brother in law and I are working on an idea to combine our love of all three Star Wars table top systems. Here is our idea for your consideration: To begin a custom campaign, players decide how many star systems they control. The number of systems is equal for each player at the beginning of the campaign. For this example we will assume each player has decided they would like a "shorter" campaign, and have decided they only have one system each (a home system). We imagine that there is one initially uncontrolled system between each player's linear "network" of systems where the first set of battles will take place. The first battle is an x-wing system battle and players decide on the point value of the game dependent on how much time they wish spend on the battle(s) during the session. 100pts is going to be our "go to" for the first x-wing phase in the first battle of the campaign, symbolizing some small skirmish that results in all out war. The winner of the x-wing battle will gain five extra upgrade card points to spend over and above the next agreed upon point value for the next battle, perhaps symbolizing some superiority in small ship tactics imagined to have occurred during the next Armada battle phase. The Armada battle phase then plays out as an otherwise normal game. The winner of the Armada battle phase is then rewarded five upgrade card points to spend over and above the next agreed upon point value of the Legion phase, which is next. A Legion Phase game is then played out otherwise normally. The winner of this battle wins five extra upgrade card points for the next battle, plus two for each system under their control (four for two systems out of three in this example). Players who have the most systems under their control will gain an extra 2 upgrade card points per system to spend over and above the agreed upon point values for each new battle thereafter until they win the campaign by capturing the others players home system, or the other player now has more systems under their control. This represents an economic superiority. The winner of the "middle" system may now attack the next system of the losing player, which in this case is also the losing player's home system. Then one x-wing battle phase is played as before, followed by an Armada phase, with points awarded as before for each. We are toying with the idea of upgrade card point rollovers so that points can be stratigically "banked" for critical battles later in the campaign. If the player defending the system wins the Armada battle phase, the assault is broken and they may now go on the offensive and try to capture the an opposing players system, starting again with an x-wing battle. If the defending player loses the Armada battle phase instead, a Legion Battle Phase takes place. If the defender wins the Legion phase, the attack has failed and the system is saved and they may now attempt to attack the other player's next system, starting with an x-wing battle again. Players defending their home system get to pick mission objectives during all phases as appropriate. Players win the campaign by capturing all the systems in the campaign (always an odd number, in this example there are three ) with the home system being the last captured to win. Before the beginning of a campaign, both players pitch in twenty bucks for a gift card to support the local gaming shop, and the winner of the campaign gets the card to put toward new pieces. Since much of the campaign is X-wing and Armada, games may be tailored point wise to the combat systems the campaigners appreciate the most, or other players acting as Ground Commanders for Legion, Squadron Leaders for X-wing, or Fleet Admirals for Armada may take up the call for the next battle phase needed. Custom details could then be added for taste, such as: upon failing to successfully win a Legion Phase, another Armada battle might have to be played to break the orbiting blockade to save the system, and if it fails, another Legion battle would follow the second Armada phase in that system. Dice roll competitions could be made to see whether or not small Legion or x-wing battles take place in other otherwise captured systems to symbolize resistance skirmishes or disruption in supply lines to nullify, freeze, or reduce the winning players pool of upgrade card points before an otherwise bigger and more critical battle, etc. It can be simplified or complicated as desired. Custom scenarios could be made for defending systems. We chose upgrade card points for battle rewards to keep a sense of balance "in our forces", but we may up the reward amount a bit later after some testing if it doesn't seem to get too unfair. What do you all think?
