[Extended] FO Aces

By Stefan, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Does this make sense?

Major Vonreg (57)
Daredevil (2)

“Quickdraw” (45)
Deuterium Power Cells (9)
Special Forces Gunner (10)
Fire-Control System (2)

“Midnight” (42)
Fanatical (2)

“Null” (30)
Total: 199

I'd take a shield upgrade over the power cells on Quickdraw. The timing on DPC is tricky to use properly and with only 3 ships losing one set of guns for a round is a big penalty. You can then fit Fanatical on Quickdraw too, increasing their threat and tankiness once the shields inevitably go down.

I would trade Midnight and Null for 3 Epsilons in a heartbeat. I hate to say it, because I loved Omega Leader in 1.0, but Midnight is just a really bad ship for the points. FOs in general just don't work well as aces due to the lack of double actions and limited repositions. And while Null is fun at I7, he's also incredibly ignorable.

As Jike suggested the DPC is best suited to either a hit and run style (Barons) or someone who can get rid of WD token (Holo).

QuickDraw in particular is a high attack cycle pilot who stands to easily lose 2 potential attacks either from shield loss+standard or maybe a front+back double tap. However, keep in mind you can double up both abilities on DPC to regen a shield and get a Stress instead of WD. If you do that you're effectively paying 9pts & stress instead of 6pts for +1 shield but(!) You also get the extra opportunity of getting around an overwhelming attack that would have just eliminated the single extra shield anyways. So in some cases this will get you an extra attack over a shield upgrade, but in other cases the 3 point bid could have gotten your choice of player 1.

It might come down to personal style whether you put DPC on Vonreg vs QuickDraw or just a Shield. Putting it on the Major you have a longer running and more valuable end game Ace whereas on QD you get a longer lasting opener that might even carry the mid-game, and with a QD shield upgrade you save a few points.

I personally dislike putting a slippery ace like Vonreg with a jouster like QD. If I'm ace-ing with FO, I'm probably going with Vonreg, Kylo, and Holo

The issue is that you can't avoid a joust with all of your ships, so having a jouster means that you'll have a ship that's prepared for that role instead of being forced into it. With that being said, Kylo is also a decent jouster with force + 3 agi, but not very efficient points wise. If you try to joust with Barons, however, you probably deserve to lose the game.

This is what i would take:

"Quickdraw" (45)
Special Forces Gunner (10)
Fire-Control System (2)

Ship total: 57 Half Points: 29 Threshold: 3

Kylo Ren (76)
Ship total: 76 Half Points: 38 Threshold: 3

Major Vonreg (57)
Daredevil (2)

Ship total: 59 Half Points: 30 Threshold: 2

Total: 192

These are imo the 3 best aces in FO, and having Quickdraw as a dedicated jouster unburdens Kylo quite a bit. Downside: their high base cost means that bidding isquite difficult. This list is already stripped down to what i would consider the bare minimumto make these pilots work, and you only get to work with 8 points after that.
