To sleeve or not to sleeve

By The Team, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Just curious on the general philosophy everybody has with card sleeving. Specifically the question I have is do you all sleeve every card all the time or do you only sleeve cards when you play and I sleeve them after?

I currently have every card sleeved and intend to continue that way but it occurred to me that if I just sleeve cards I’m using and I sleeve them after I save a ton of space and can stop buying sleeves every time these a new expansion.

On the other hand un-sleeving and re-sleeving doesn’t sound awesome. And I worry about card damage while in the box, though I’m sure that’s nonsense and they’d be just fine.

What are your general thoughts and practices on this subject?

I've sleeved everything so far, but that's mostly because the card pool is still really shallow and trying out different deck combinations.

With the massive collection of LOTR LCG cards I have, I sleeve all of the encounter cards in clear Maydays, but keep the player cards unsleeved until I build them into a deck. Saves on storage space. I also use different colors/graphics of sleeves for individual decks so I can easily tell which deck is which, so it would be a bit of a pain to sleeve everything the same, then have to pull them out of the clear sleeves to put them in colored sleeves for a deck. If Champs ever gets to that point with player cards, I'll do the same thing.

I sleeve the hero specific cards and my current hero deck(s) in standard sleeves. It makes it a bit easier to switch between heroes/aspects this way. Unused aspect and neutral cards are unsleeved. If I want to swap a hero/aspect only a few cards get taken in or out so re-sleeving takes little time. Scenario and hero obligations are all done with inner sleeves. Inner sleeves are a bit cheaper to use in bulk and take up slightly less room. They stay sleeved. The villain cards are also standard sleeved. Standard sleeves on villains make them easier for me to find in the box and act as pseudo dividers.

I have all my cards sleeved. However, currently that's only the Core set, because it's still really hard to get hold of expansions in the UK.

I sleeve because I don’t like boxing on the corners, and in this game you shuffle, a lot.

I don't typically sleeve most board games, unless there's a lot of shuffling involved. I think this one does qualify, but the primary reason I sleeved things in this game is to color-coordinate what is what. Villain cards get one sleeve color, each hero gets their own sleeve color. I can tell at a glance what's what. I only sleeve decks I've built, so I all my unused heroes and aspect cards are unsleeved, waiting to be used. All villain cards got sleeved the same color so that it's easy to grab modules and put the villain deck together.

It does take up space, and with the Thor pack, I'll probably start looking into new storage solutions. It's pretty crammed with all the releases up through Wrecking Crew, and it looks like we'll be getting a steady flow of additional packs, so it's probably time.

I sleeve also.

Just maybe don't start now using FFG sleeves, as apparently they're discontinuing them? Possibly? (It seems unlikely, but BGG is going crazy about it...)

Holy smokes!

This is the first game I’ve fully sleeved and I got 13 packs of FFG sleeves to do so.

If they change, I will unsleeve non-hero deck cards and resleeve them in the new ones or Dragon Shields.

Haven't even read the OP or any of the other post. You must sleeve.

Read the thread, how come you all don't use the recommended FFG card sleeves? I've been using them since Android Netrunner, they're great and always even cut. I have a bunch of Mayday sleeves I use for backup if I don't have the FFG sleeves at the moment. Right on the core box they tell you how many FFG sleeves you need and what sizes. I like FFG sleeves because there's room at the top opening of the sleeve, it's great at keeping the cards fully protected while shuffuling. Mayday leaves no space at the top so I'm always worried about the edges of the cards.

I do like FFG sleeves for all sizes except Standard. I use clear sleeves for storage only, and FFG sleeves are too expensive. Given their quality, they feel quite excessive for that purpose. At the other end of the spectrum, I've always found Mayday, even the Premium ones, feeling a bit cheap to the touch. I've always used Ultra-Pro Clear Standard. That silly logo at the bottom never gets in the way of my happiness, because again I use clear sleeves only for storage.

With Marvel Champions specifically, I've decided to sleeve everything ready for play at all times. I use Matte Dragonshields.

I have a large stock of FFG's Netrunner art sleeves and I loved both their feel and their size. I've recycled them for my Keyforge decks. The day we get equivalent sleeves for Marvel Champions, I might switch, depending on the art, but considering the new Gamegenic sleeves for Keyforge, which are different (I still like them though, as they are matte), I believe the future of FFG sleeves runs through them (Gamegenic is part of Asmodée).

I use to get the colored back sleeves (Red, Blue) I never bothered with the ANR sleeves, I was going to get 2 packs for the championship decks they use to have every year, but the game was canceled. Only clear sleeves I use so far are Mayday and like you said, I use them for storage too. I had some sleeves with a little sticker in the corner, I forgot the game, but they're good quality sleeves imo, I used them to sleeve a ANR core box so I knew those were all sets from the core in case someone wanted to demo the basic game.

So far, I've sleeved all standard-sized cards, except for the extra cards beyond the playset. I use a single color for player cards and another single color for encounter cards, so no resleeving is necessary. Double-sided cards and non-shuffled cards (identities, villains and environments) get clear sleeves.

My setup is almost like yours lol. I got the game as a birthday gift so I didn't get sleeves with the core, but I had some left over blue and red FFG sleeves, it wasn't enough to cover all the cards in the core so I decided to just sleeve the learn how to play stuff with my red and blue sleeves, then later I decided to just sleeve the rest of the cards with clear Mayday. I don't have the little cards sleeved yet, I just use the tokens from Sentinels of The Multiverse lol. I have the double sided cards all in clear Mayday.

I started the same way you did, with the red and blue for Android Netrunner, but honestly, I think they leave too much room and I prefer a tighter fit (without exposing the top edge, obviously). For games where there is a lot of shuffling I pretty much use Dragon Shields exclusively these days (including for Marvel Champions). I hear Katana's are also pretty good, but have never tried them.

As for Champions, I have everything sleeved right now, but plan on putting Hero/Aspect cards in a binder and only sleeve what I play while keeping all villain cards in sleeves.

I have found the most cost effective way is to sleeve your encounter cards and put your Hero/Aspect cards in a card binder. That way, you can just sleeve your deck as you build/play them and by having them in a binder, you can flip through them easier which I find makes deck-building a bit more user friendly

i personally never sleeve games. usually i dont play them enough, or i dont have to shuffle them enough to warrant the extra expense.

that said, for this game i had to sleeve because i had the problem where some cards were cut smaller/larger than the rest, which annoyed me to no end, so i had to sleeve. i now sleeve everything so i can easily make different decks without having to unsleeve and resleeve cards. im cheap, so i just buy the cheapest clear sleeves i can find, i have no need of better/more expensive ones.

im also glad i sleeved because i got into creating custom heroes, so i can just print them on plain paper and slip them into sleeves of cards im not using, which also gives me a good use for all the wasted duplicate cards from the hero packs.
