Phase 2 Clone Troopers - Not Impressed

By Tri3, in Star Wars: Legion

I’m sort of in both camps on the pre-done versus hobbying. I really like how easy it is to keep up in xwing and have a high quality ship on the table the day I buy it.

But, I enjoy the painting aspects of legion. Maybe that’s why I’ve continued to buy legion despite not really playing it as much. I enjoy it as a creative outlet more than a game I suppose, both for terrain pieces and painted minis.

On phase 2 and hard plastic: I have to admit, I feel like these guys have all the downsides of sprue and hard plastic with none of the upsides. I’m hoping the ARC troopers will be better equipped in the customization department for sure. But I probably am going to hold off on these guys. There’s only so much white + coloration you can do before you need a break.

False.

@TauntaunScout is that Kings of War? I’ve got some friends in the hobby space that are starting to look at it and see if they can lure me in.

Looks like a Warhammer Fantasy Vampire Counts army, but could be used for KoW also.

Those are classic undead chariots from the days before Vampire counts , nice.

Personally, I find it funny how many complaints there are about the hard plastic given how many people harped on Legion for being soft plastic initially. Some of that was people assuming hard plastic would mean complete customization, but I assumed the license would lead FFG to doing push fit style single pose miniatures. One small upside, I haven't heard about as many mispacks from the hard plastic kits as I did the soft plastics.

I think this is a result of people only speaking up when they are not sastisfied. If you have what you want, you don't say anything. I always liked the ease of the soft plastics, so just shrugged my shoulders when others stated their preference for sprues/hard plastic. P1s were the best soft plastic models we had ever received, with the arms easily interchangeable to create variety. As a result, P2s actually felt like a step back. I reserved judgement until actually trying the hard plastic, but I didn't enjoy the experience.

That said, I'm hopeful that future units won't have these issues. My son has built all the droids, and while tedious, they haven't been difficult. The design for the droids have also allowed for quite a bit of customization, more so than the P2s. I'm hopeful future Republic units will be better.

I agree with most here that the P1 clones were the most customizable (without additional tools) models to date and that the P2 clones were a bit of a let down after the P1s. Hopefully the ARC troopers will have a bit more part interchangeability than the P2 models.

Makes me glad that I only decided to go with 2x sets of P2s.

@ScummyRebel @NeonWolf @Darth evil That is over 3,000 points worth of Undead, as defined by the late 4th, early 5th, edition army book. After that, Vampire Counts came out, then 6th edition dropped and VC and TK each got a new army book.

The models range from the 80's to 90's and contain a lot of metal. The plastic infantry, cavalry and chariots are the 80's skeleton sprues. Took me a long time to track down enough of those in good enough condition! Painting that army (which technically began around 1998, then a very long hiatus) is why I hadn't been doing much Legion stuff lately.

They will indeed work quite nicely for Kings of War. There's old school GW people working on that game, so it makes sense. I structured the units with half an eye to the KoW rules, as that game is probably going to represent the majority of my chances to play with them.

At this point in life, I don't consider myself a fan of specific gaming or miniature companies, so much as I follow my favorite game writers and miniatures sculptors. If this was music, think about how weird it would be if someone listened to their favorite record label, instead of their favorite music. I approach miniature gaming more the way people like bands and singers.

The collection, not to say "army list", consists of:

  • Vampire
  • Wight
  • Wraith
  • Mounted Wight
  • 2x Screaming Skull Catapults
  • 2x Undead Chariots
  • 2x Bat Swarms (the only plastic in the army besides skeleton sprues)
  • 20 Skeletons w/ spear, shield, light armor led by wight, standard bearer, and musician
  • 20 Skeletons w/ shield led by wight, standard bearer, and musician
  • 10 Skeletons w/ bows
  • 20 Zombies w/ shield, light armor, led by standard bearer and musician
  • 10 Ghosts
  • 10 Ghouls
  • 10 Skeleton horsemen w/ shield, light armor, lance, led by wight and standard bearer
  • 10 Mummies w/ light armor and great weapon

Plus 5 spare zombies, skeleton spearmen, and skeleton swordsmen, for "Raise the Dead" spells. I've got an army standard bearer painted for it as well but he still needs his paper flag.

Now, how exactly that plays out into an army list depends on the game system. But when I was in high school, that was a force from which one could have recruited a 3,000 point army. I have a few more things I'd like to add to the force but it's in good shape for now. One of these days I'll paint a couple necromancers (one on foot, one mounted) a 2nd classic Vampire model, and 5 more skeleton cavalry.

Maybe up the bowmen to 20 but I don't have the bitz on hand for that.

More recently, I painted around 1,200 points of 5th edition Bretonnians, from which to draw 1,000 point lists or play small KoW skirmishes. I even tracked down the old hex shaped, white snap top lid, Citadel Colour to make these armies REALLY look oh-so-1990's.

I feel like, for the price increase, that the hard plastic ”upgrade” wasn’t really worth it. The P1 soft plastic looks amazing and were more cusomisable for 2/3 of the price.

I would prefer that fantasy flight didn’t redo the older kits in hard plastic and kept the old price for them.

That's probably a lot of it, but I sometimes see names that seem familiar from the old complaints. Probably some cases where people assumed that hard plastic innately meant complete customization.

Just goes to show you can't please all the people all of the time.

IMO for the extra money, they should have included an extra spruce that could have had various options for the figures including misc terrain to put on the base , maybe a few objective token pieces or something.

Well, I'd argue that spruce would be much more of a pain to deal with. 😉

Kamas I wanted kamas!!!

The Phase IIs are a let down.

Zero customization just sucks. At least with a GW model you have a large number of details, and can often mix arms around with not a lot of effort. These were all literally 1 choice builds.

The hand pegs were a joke... utterly useless.

Also, no kamas... what was up with that?

I do like having the option for no kamas but I wish there was more customization options with them and kamas and pauldrons would have been sweet options

Ive assembled 3 phase 2 units and taken 1 to completion so far. The level of detail is reasonably higher, so props for that. I agree with all the complaints about the lack of poseability options though. I just got done doing 4 phase 1 squads with every mini unique aside from unit leaders, and was very disappointed when I realized if I wanted that on phase 2s it would mean a lot of cutting and green stuff sculpting, which I dont want to do en masse. Its not the end of the world, but I hope the arc trooper packs have the swappable limbs again as I dont really want my clones to look copy pasta'd even if they are clones.
