Considering starting, can this army theme work?

Hi.

So I'm considering starting playing, in part because the miniatures would be useful for the roleplaying game I'm GMing even if I end up not liking the game. Since the game doesn't allow Hutt Cartels I'll settle for second best and go rebel alliance. Since the unit I visually most associate with them and find coolest is the fleet troopers I thought a list with them as a base would be cool and from that grew the idea to base it entirely on the start of "A new hope" and have a few units of them, Leia, R2D2 and C-3P0. But before ordering this I wanted to check. Would this be an army that works?

Fleet troopers are fun, but you cap out at 6 units of them for standard play. With Leia, R2, and 3PO you won't make a full army out of just them.

Edit: is this a list you want to be competitive or just for style points?

They're also rather short ranged and somewhat based around defending a fixed position. It can make it very easy to simply stand out of range of their pistols and pick them apart. They are much better on more terrain heavy boards with fewer long lines of sight. You may have better luck starting with the Skirmish rules, where there strengths are easier to capitalize on.

To answer the competative question. It would mostly be for friendly play but wouldn't want to be outmatched every game, I have my bloodbowl halflings for that. Hmm...too bad it wouldn't really work as is. Maybe that heavy laser could be themed to a ship-style cannon with navytroop theme to keep the theme but expand both range and model count.

In Skirmish Corp units max out at 4. Leia, R2-D2 (with C-3PO) and four units of Fleet Troopers (with the extra trooper and Scatter Gun - an awesome weapon in Skirmish) comes out to 452 of your 500 points. Add in some additional upgrades to round them out, and you’ll have a decent Skirmish force. Darth Vader (appropriately) and other Force users will likely give you trouble with Immune: Pierce; in those cases remember to play to the scenario rather than just trying to kill the opponent’s units. After all, the Rebels won in the movie by sacrificing a ton of Fleet Troopers while R2 completed his Secret Mission!

It depends on what you mean by "work." It will work within the bounds of the rules of the game but isn't exactly going to be winning tournaments.

I mean both will it be allowed ruleswise and will it be a list that can hold its own in most friendly games.

In skirmish (500 point version of the game) it could well work. In the full (800 point) game you would need to fill out a lot more points, and will likely be shot off the table before they can do much. However, if you want to play legion as legion, and not just to use the models for rpg, then you will need the core set as well. A core set (Luke, 2 squads of rebel troopers, and a AT-RT), Leia, R2-D2 + C-3PO, a couple squads of fleet troopers, and maybe a box of rebel commandos could make a fun 800 point list. The trouble that fleet troopers have is their short range attack. This means that they usually get shot to pieces before they can really do anything. But Leia, and R2 both have command cards that give extra movement to a couple of units. You can also give the fleets recon intel (an upgrade that gives a free move during deployment). All of this combined might be able to get those fleets into range quickly enough to do some real damage. I haven't tried this myself, so I have no idea if it will really work, but it just might work. And should be fun in any event.

They don't make ANH Leia. Only Endor Leia :(

this is great start for a 500 point game i think that where fleet trooper shine so depends on what type game you want to play.

You could also add a box or two of Rebel Specialists. The Officer as a personnel upgrade is very good on Fleet Troopers, and the medical droid can be useful as well. Both would fit pretty well with the theme, I think.

A conversion project can be fun and will make my army more unique.

Unfortunately this game isn’t the best when it comes to balance. About the only thing currently that’s competitive for rebels is taking 3 units of tauns, snipers and min units of rebel troopers for activations...

True, if your biggest concern is competitive play. I'm glad the people I play with are more casual.

You could consider getting 3 units of Rebel Commandos and run the Saboteurs with the Fleets and you could also get Sabine. Then if you run up with your fleets, saboteurs and Sabine at the same time, your opponent might have a hard time focusing all those units down and they’re all quite deadly at close range.

There are lots of things you can try in Legion, but the rebels are a little behind as far as being balanced with the other factions right now. As Never Tell Me mentioned, you kind of need Tauntauns to be competitive right now in an 800 point game. If theme is an issue with Tauntauns, there have been some paint jobs where players painted the Tauns and their riders as commandos or even like the troops from Rogue 1.
There will no doubt be a points rebalance at some point (probably after worlds). Then the rebels will probably be in a much better position. They did get the majority of buffs in the last update.
