Spending Accuracy - Timing

By Cpt ObVus, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

I think I know how this works, but I want to double-check myself...

When I spend accuracies from my pool, I can do it at any time during spend/modify dice, and I don’t need to spend them all at once, right? Here’s a scenario:

I have an Assault SSD with Heavy Ion Emplacements, Leading Shots, and Gunnery Chief Varnillian. Gunny V is holding an accuracy die. I’m attacking a Starhawk with Damage Control Officer aboard. It’s late in the game. It has only a Brace and a Contain left for defense tokens.

I roll an attack from my right forward arc (3 red, 2 blue). I get the following:

Reds: blank, blank, blank

Blues: hit, hit.

Ugh. I decide to use Varnillian to switch out one of the blank reds for an accuracy.

I spend the accuracy to stop his Brace.

It’s the last shot I’m gonna get; I have to try everything. So I use Leading Shots to spend one of my blue hits to reroll the other blue and the remaining blank reds. They come up:

Red: accuracy, double hit

Blue: critical

So now I spend the red accuracy to block his Contain. DCO can’t stop HIEs from happening, and I got the blue crit, so he loses his last shield point, then takes 3 (one from my blue critical, two from my double hit red). Success! The Starhawk loses its last three hull and dies.

Is that all legal? Basically, I’m wondering if it’s okay to spend an accuracy, use a bunch of other spend/modify/add actions, then spend more accuracy. They don’t need to be spent all at once, do they?

And yes, I know that if we pass on to the Spend Defense Tokens step, it’s too late to spend accuracy dice, so if Lando (or some other effect) forces me to reroll into accuracies, they’re worthless... all this happened before that step, though. Thanks!

Correct. You may spend accuracies and modify dice multiple times in any order you choose.

It's a nice selling point for Veteran Gunners; you can spend any initial accuracies you think you'll need before rerolling all remaining dice.

As Jabbawookie said, you are correct. Veteran Gunners is a prime example of how this can be helpful. You must reroll all the dice in your pool if you use VG, but spending an accuracy removes it from the pool. So you can spend an accuracy, then use VG on the remaining dice, and then still spend any new accuracies.

Yeah, that’s exactly the interaction that got me thinking about this. Somewhere waaay back in the mists of time, I became convinced that Veteran Gunners were just horrid, and never gave them another look until like, last week, when I realized I’d just plain read them wrong.

To be fair: They're still pretty much a sub-optimal choice for most things in comparison... At least on the Imperial Side, you tend to find you get copious reroll or fixing options.

Now, for Rebels, they can be *more* tempting, but its still VERY difficult to convince yourself to reroll 3 Blanks when your fourth Die is a Double.

Too bad Caitken and Shollan are a thing... It takes a very well distributed set of blanks for them not to be a better choice most of the time.

Yes. I think the only reason they seem more tempting now is because of the two Weapons Team slots on the Onager. They combine favorably with some other weapon teams.

Yeah, basically. They used to be worth considering on a Raider-II with HIE, but now WBT is better.
