need some advice on char development

By Oldmike1, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

so I been playing over a year with a force using tech whos driven to learn all they can about the force and how things work (aka tech)

soon I will be (unless something BAD happens) building a ship and will be in all likely hood flying it right now I have a 2(or3 can pick it up with exp) agi and enhance

is this ok? do you need to have more skills or what not to be the pilot in this game do I pick up a starfighter ace or a lightsaber tree

I am torn as we have had only 4 or 5 space fights so I don't know how needed the skills are and we just run away

as this will cost me 50 exp I hope for some feed back

some info I am a good crafter so the ship will be pretty good stat wise and as of now I am ok in ground combat but in no way can take on anything bigger then a wompa solo

the main thing for the ship is we are getting into stuff that makes us need to split up from time to time and the ship is so loaded down we have no room in it left for anything

and unless the GM has something shocking happen soon this seems to be the best plan

You only need Piloting to navigate terrain or participate in a chase. Usually, you can just use Maneuvers for everything else.

You can pick up the skills for an XP penalty that is small enough that you'd be better off not buying the spec, as I doubt you'd need more than 3 ranks each in Piloting (Space)/Gunnery for a total of 30XP.

However, there is still the question of talents. If you are going to be in space combat as rarely as you implied, I'd suggest going with your preferred direction of character development, which in this case sounds like a lightsaber tree.

If you're just going to run away, I'd suggest picking up ranks in Piloting (Space) for chases, whether you get the tree or not. If the tree you're looking at has ranks in Shortcut, you might want to pick that up as well. There is also Full Throttle which makes you significantly faster.

Something to keep in mind (and something I find a bit odd) is that Handling is better than speed in a chase because even if you are going slower than your opponent, you can reliably gain on them as long as you can roll better in a chase. Speed does help you gain extra range bands on them though.

If your GM isn't actually using the chase rules and you're mostly running from big cap ships that can't keep up, knuckle down on the speed and ignore ranks in piloting, but watch out for asteroid fields.

You might want to look at the racer tree in "endless vigil" which is geared toward speed and races/chases

based on what you have so far you probably want the Manipulate force power and possibly the Seek force power.
depending on what kind of kind of pilot you want to be you have options. There is the ace pilot tree. the smuggler pilot tree the Hotshot tree and for force users the Racer and the starfighter ace trees. So we would need to know the style of pilot you want to run so we can direct you to the right tree.

the starfighter ace tree seemed to be good at staying alive so I was thinking about going with that

I already have the manipulate power (that part of how I can craft so well)

the main thing is I am at the point that trees are a lot of exp so if I will likely need it to be an ok pilot I will want to get it now

I hope to talk to the main pilot player of the group soon for his input but I wanted to get more from others also

right now my piloting is 3 green and 5 force dice

You dont need the tree to be a good pilot. the tree just makes you able to do more as a pilot. The question is what niche as a pilot do you want to fill. And since you are not the main pilot this question is more important. What do you want to acomplish? what would you find fun? is a starfighter an option if the other pilot is running a freighter?

the ship will be a starfighter (a freighter built to be starfighter size so it can take a hit) it will also free up space on the main ship as we have 5 players (1 droid) 5 NPC droids and 4 other NPCs

many time over the last 3 or 4 games we wished to be 2 places at the same time but cant as we only had one ship we also found a "dead" ship over 3000 year old but the main pilot will not risk the YT to dock so this will let us do that and deal with other times one or 2 players wish to do somethings away from the group

take a look at the Kestrel in the Dawn of Rebellion book.

I agree with @EliasWindrider on this. Racer is an excellent spec if you want to become a pilot, particularly since, not only does it make both Piloting skills career skills, but it also includes the entire Full Throttle talents.

Another spec I'd suggest, particularly, if you're building a freighter, is Ship's Captain . It also has a number of great talents, particularly the "Pride and Joy" group of talents, though these talents do require that your ship be at least Sil 4 or larger.

Look at the kst-100 in dawn of rebellion, it fits your use case perfectly, I've posted stats here

But if you're really interested in mechanically rather than narratively I crafting a ship then I'd suggest you look at these nubian design Collective's whole vehicle crafting handbook houserules

Occasionally @Tramp Graphics and I agree on things 😝 ... however I would suggest taking a look at shipwright from fully operational over ship captain, you might want too look at rigger from stay on target.

Rigger gives you a signature vehicle which is a little like pride and joy but from a technical rather than command perspective.

Shipwright has push the specs which is like an int based full throttle, and has some nifty mechanics stuff.

For a lightsaber spec I'd suggest either jedi: knight(doesn't let you change light6stat but very solid anyway and it grants you a force rating) or force sensitive outcast (pick your lightsaber stat), or soresu defender (int based, but no force rating, and it knight does soresu (protecting others) better than soresu defender), or padawan survivor (best lightsaber crafting in the game thanks to secrets of the jedi and improved), niman-disciple complements almost any build well (best self defensive lightsaber spec in the game, second best offensively, provides a force rating, but uses willpower not int so a less than perfect fit for your build)
