Train thoughts: Come on FFG.....Carnor Jax....

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing

Imperial Brothers and Sisters lend me your ears!

Carnor is one of my favourite Imperial pilots, he was all around great in 1.0, anyone who says otherwise is a Rebel and a traitor and shall be paid a visit by the ISB. It seemed to work for the Starwing, so I thought I would start the spam thread of Carnor, it’s about time FFG.

Brothers and Sisters, tell us your favourite Carnor stories and let’s show FFG why he needs to be back in the game.

Come on FFG! Let’s have a second named Interceptor pilot to use!

Nope. Keep him out of the game!

Make his ability cost 3 crits to him! (mandatory hull upgrade purchase)

On a ship that lives or dies on it's aces, having 2 is sad. I'd take these guys at this point:

It appears the ISB is going to be quite busy today.

make him affect force instead and I'm willing to negotiate terms

*Still not Carnor*

You get Ember into an Imperial list and I will call you a cheater 😉

Ember is nothing like Carnor, so many caveats to get the ability to work at a less than impressive Initiative.

At the start of activation, you may choose one ship at range 0-1. If you do, you may spend 1 charge. That ship cannot alter eyeballs results during the engagement phase.

Oh yeah, we love pilots that take away player agency around here.

Like Palob, 4-LOM, Ketsu, any Nantek w/ensnare, Torani, Darth Vader crew....

That's a list off the top of my head in under a minute.

So obviously more helps.

Just because they exist, does not make it healthy.

I have no personal objection, but I can see why people would object.

If he was to make it into the game, I feel his ability would have to have some restriction. Ideally: Give players a choice of two bad options. He should prevent use of focus or force tokens, unless player takes a damage or gains a strain token or something like that. Still bad...but still giving the player agency.

Which is why I am starting a petition to move all combat into open space. NO MORE ASTEROIDS.

I land on them, and what do I get to do?? NOTHING!!!!!!! And I don't get any say about it at all!!!

It's outrageous.

I also expect to be able to have my Emotional Support Porg with me on all missions, as well.

The issue is that Asteroids don't move onto you. Using your example as a reference, the only way Carnor would be balanced is if he was Initiative 0. That way if you move into range 1 of him, that's your bad.

However, given that Carnor would most likely fill the I5 gap, that means there are a lot of ships who Carnor can just "I barrel roll...I boost...and oh look I am at range 1." It's not hard to proc a range 1 ability on a ship with one reposition let alone two.

Not to mention the existence of Ion, Tractor, and Jam as game mechanics...

Nice exaggeration Meanie.

Eh, well, the cry of "player agency" whenever there is a negative repercussion built into a game mechanic is getting out of hand, too.

If an enemy ship gets the drop on you, bad things will happen. It is a war game, after all.

but it is also supposed to be fun, removing the agency can create a bad play experience. As I said, I am not against the idea. Things do need to be carefully balanced and a key tenant of game design is to give players choice.

I don’t know about you, but getting 5 diced by Fenn or Wedge dropping my agility at any range is not fun for me. Mines being dropped in my path too.
My fun is derived from tackling problems and working out a solution. I don’t find fighting swarms fun, but they are interesting.

It’s not up to FFG to make it fun for us, but provide the tools so we can create our own fun.

2 force charge. At the start of the engagement, may spend 2 force to prevent every other ship at range 0-1 from spending green token during attack or defense.

Can do it less often, and cost a resource, which seems to usually be the crux of 2.0 design (also affect friendly ships, to reflect is slightly backstabbing nature in killing of the royal guard and clone palp.)

Is two force to strong for him? Maybe. Thoughts?

I loved Carnor. In fact, I liked him better than 1.0 'all of the tokens' Fel.

One of my favorite lists to this day was also probably my most thematic: Captain Kagi w/Palpatine, Carnor Jax, and a Royal Guard Interceptor. The escorts would fly up, and Kagi would hang back just enough to not be a target, but close enough to force people to TL him when they wanted to shoot Carnor. Not the most firepower, but it felt like it was manipulating the battlefield and clouding the minds of the opposing pilots. It felt like I didn't just have Palpatine in the list, but that everything in the game transpired according to his design. I loved it, and I miss that feeling of thematically effective lists.

No Interceptor pots are currently Hyperspace legal, not sure we can expect another one any time soon!

Which is a real shame, because squints deserve love too. Especially Turr Phennir, poor dude is ace yet constantly overlooked.

Aces are "acey" because they can do 1 of 2 things:

They have an advantage that makes them better than the average Joe.

They inflict a disadvantage that makes their target worse than the average Joe.

Not getting to spend a focus or evade 1 turn thanks to bad positioning is not "losing agency;" it's 1 bad turn.

My thought had been to drop his ability down to bullseye arc. But this is elegant, too. Or make it charge based.

But saying his ability cannot exist within the framework of the game because it removed player agency is silly.

Oh please. Nine times out of ten an asteroid is your fault. Now if rocks start chasing you, call me back.
