Misfortunes

What are people's thoughts on Misfortunes and the Misfortune tables? I like the idea that the old profits are not stable, but possibly subject to the whims of fate. Rolling every game session, though, seems like alot. In addition "swift and decisive action' to counteract any given one of these misfortunes would take a game session in and of itself, then you roll again!

Are there any GMs out there currently using the Misfortune table as written? How is it working, and/or how are the players reacting? Does it really make the most sense to just ignore the misfortunes unless they're in the minus 4-5 profit range?

Personally, I find that it's more useful to pick options from the table (or roll only for inspiration purposes), rather than adhere slavishly to rolls on that table.

I rolled on it once or twice early in my current campaign and then left it alone. Unless a party is making profit factor every session or two, I could see the tables overwhelming them quickly. If a party is out in the Expanse, it could be weeks or months before they can return to defend their interests in Calixis or further afield.

Recently, I made them suffer -4 PF thanks to the sworn enemies of the rogue trader sabotaging his interests on Scintilla and in core Calixis worlds. From now on, I'll bring in "misfortunes" when it makes sense for the plot and not at random.
