An idea for an Unofficial Sequel Era Resource...

By MassiveJammies, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey all,

Longtime lurker and first-time poster. I spend most of my time on the subreddit and pitched this idea there which seemed to get some traction. I figured it might not be a bad idea to reach out here.

So with reports abound that the RPG is being discontinued, it seems as though we may not get the Sequel Era sourcebook we were hoping for. But even if the official support for this product is shutting down, there's nothing stopping us from putting our heads together and working something up ourselves.

Kainrath's unbelievable Mos Shutta Gazetteer has really inspired me, personally. But putting together an entire sourcebook by myself would be a big undertaking.

So my pitch is to collaborate on putting together an unofficial homebrewed sourcebook about the characters, locations, items and ships of the Sequel Era.

I hope to get some volunteers to brainstorm what the document covers and then divvy up responsibilities to stat out and write up each section. Of course, this is unofficial, so it's all strictly volunteer work with no commitment. I adore this system and putting together something for a lot of us to collaborate on seems like a fitting way to send it off.

We'd be looking for any help we can get, be it brainstorming, statting out characters or ships, writing backgrounds on locations or coming up with adventure hooks.

I've started a Google Doc with rough ideas for what the sourcebook could cover, which we would then whittle down and divvy out to whoever was interested in helping.

Would any of you be interested?

Wanted to bump this so others get a look at it. Pity so many first-time posts get buried while awaiting moderation.

I would be very happy to help with the design and layout. Not sure I could commit to the writing (can’t even get my own stuff completed) but would love to help brainstorm too.

I’ve actually got a few small bits done for one, including a cover (two versions, actually - one with the design elements of the TFA Beginner Game and one with the blue “generic” elements).

I’d be very interested. Let me know how I can help.

Does anyone have ball droid stats, speaking of which.

Appreciate the feedback. That was the first one I did for it. But then I remembered I had a template for the BG, and thought about maintaining “line consistency” by using it. So I’m torn.

@Nytwyng - what font are you suing for the "An Era Sourcebook" text? It looks spot-on.

Some people are working on something similar to this over on Discord: https://discord.gg/vEgPZtc

It looked looks like Maqui Heavy. https://www.linotype.com/732832/maqui-family.html

Yep. Yes, it’s not free, but I used a donation I got over at mySWRPG to invest in a license.

Prior to that, I was using a site somewhere that let you create text images, made transparent png’s and layered those in for the title and book type lines. It’s SO much easier having the font.

Yeah, I'm going to need this.

The google sheet link didn't work for me.

Alternatively you could subscribe to a font service like I do (two actually because the Adobe subscription includes their type foundry), but I also bought two weights of Maqui individually so I could install it on my phone and tablet instead of paying $200 plus for the whole typeface family.

Adobe cloud?

They don’t have it, fonts.com does, the foundry is called typodermic. There are limitations to subscription font service licensees like you need to keep paying your monthly $12. If you want more unrestricted access you need to by a license outright, but an individual weight goes for around $20 or less.

I bought Maqui bold and Maqui Bold Italic because I feel it’s a better screen font than heavy is. If I was doing a print project with colored text on black I’d use the heavy weight because ink spreads slightly, including the black.

My own attempt at some "cover concepts". Reposted these on the Discord too - character art is by Darren Tan:

Love the Rey. But it messes with my mind when a character on one of these covers has a foot above the lower image frame. 🤣

Yeah, it isn't perfect unfortunately. But Darren Tan is the guy who has done a lot of the other cover art characters so wanted to use his Rey to keep it consistent. If there's alternative art out there I could do a version with that too.

It’s a beautiful cover. It’s absolutely just a personal design thing for me. Great work.

It looks good, but the inner editor in me thinks you guys might want to work on the lightsabers.

@Nytwyng , I have some experience in this area, and it looks off because the aura is showing through to a background that is different than the actual background. I'd have to fiddle around with it myself to really figure it out, but perhaps you can increase the opacity and/or darken it a bit? It's hard to just copy-paste from an existing picture and then fit it into the picture, so perhaps you should cut out the blade and draw it in yourself?

@Kualan , I think you should probably soften the edges of Rey's lightsaber a bit and blur both parts of the blade a bit more. The aura looks out of place, but if you blend the others into each other and then into the aura it ought to be improved significantly. Just to experiment, I used a simple box select/Gaussian Blur of 9 (I use paint.net) on a length of the blade and it was much improved. Kylo's blade is much more difficult because it should be spitting sparks and look jagged, so I don't really blame you there. If it were just a regular lightsaber, it would be much better than Rey's (though it should probably still be blurred a bit).

Just my two cents worth.

Totally agree. The tools available to me depend on the computer I'm on. Lately, I've been working on my laptop, and the effect filters on it are stupid limited. When I tried it, it just looked...well, not awful, but equally wrong in a different way. So, what's there now is a "good enough" draft until I park my tail at the desktop. (Months ago, when I slapped together that "Nightcrawler Jedi" pic for a joke answer in another thread, I had to jump up and run to the desktop to get the sabers right.)

Could potentially help with fixing up a bit of writing and rules here and there. Can't put it as a top priority for me so won't be amazing ammounts but fixing a bit here and there I could probably do.
