Card maps in 'The Gathering Storm'

By Blueboi72, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Maybe it's just me (wont be the first time!), but is anyone else a little disappointed with the card maps in 'The Gathering Storm'?

To make it easier i'll list my main gripes;

  • Too small - the side with the detail is, for me, hard to read (i'm getting on a bit at 38! lol)
  • Double sided - As a GM i really do not want to be handing out a map to my players that has all the detail on the other side when you flip it over!
  • Not re-printed in the main book (well except for one of them) - maybe i wouldn't have minded the small size if i had a larger version printed in the book for reference.

Again, maybe it's just me and a visit to a photocopier set at 500% will do the job but you pays your money & therefore are entitled to an opinion. A bit lacking especially compared with the wealth of maps printed within a 'Dark Heresy' release etc.

Apart from the gripes i actually like the maps - but please make them bigger in future releases! Oh & please add them as downloads to the support page!

Replies in agreement or not appreciated.

I like the idea, but yeah, they are so small I have to have a magnifying glass to read them (disclaimer: I'm getting old). The text on them is next to useless. It would be nice if each map was printed on multiple cards and pieced together, I guess.

P.S. Small But Vicious App on Android. That is all.

I second those opinions. Ok, maybe I third them (sorry, bad joke!) :)

i think map handouts that were just a little bit larger, like the size of a warhammer invasion capital would have been better. i like the idea of not putting them on a full sheet of paper but as they are now they are too hard to read.

I must concur. I would assume 99% of us posting on this are GMs and there's something in every GM that loves a good eye-popping table-wide map.

I like Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps. The complete map would cover eighteen dinner tables easily.

I'm sad to agree because I really enjoy Warhammer 3rd edition... Yes, the party sheet format is inappropriate for such accessories (letters, maps, etc...). they are too small for my players, and I will have to enlarge those documents at my local copy store.

- bigger maps

- bigger font

- a bit more detail

yes to all

"FFG - bringing business to local copy shops since 2010"

No, really I don't mind the size - enough stuff gets spread on the table as it is. Adding a larger map and a bunch of handouts would be really messy.

What I miss though is a nice map of the Empire, or at least the Reikland. Good thing there are a few very nice maps available online.

Yup all sound points.

I've noted elsewhere that the maps also "give away" cues to Players even when using the side with no labels. Oh the swirly thing with lightning bolt and there's one particular cave of interest in those hills..

The map of the vicinity of Stromdorf is totally useless as every location of interest in the adventure is clearly noted, even without labels. The map of Stromdorf itself similarly has all the key locations highlighted, with text labels on the GM side. The PC side only removes the labels and not only leaves the important buildings highlighted, it leaves the arrows pointing to them from where the text label would be. May as well have every label text replaced with something along the lines of "Make sure you go here!" As others have note, the GM side, with its teeny-tiny print that my 49 year old eyes can't read even with my progressive lenses on, is a serious issue. These can't really be given to the players because of their dual sided nature, they can only be shown and I wouldn't want to give them either of the first two anyway. So they fail as both handouts and GM aids.

You will be pleased to know I've uploaded a PDF of the maps for The Gathering Storm on the WFRP Support Page.

Thanks Ynnen, though it still is a problem that the "unannotated" versions contain "giveaways" about locations of particular things.

The player map should have multiple farms, a few clouds, a few caves in hills etc.

The Garden of Morr player map shouldn't give away the break in wall to get through.

Rob

Hi all.

Thanks for all your replies, it was an interesting read especially as the points i raised are (in the most part) views that a fair few others seem to share.

I'm not one (generally speaking) for having gigantic maps on the table but i do remember that when i ran a 'Marienburg' adventure a few years back i used the map from the book ('Sold down the river' - anyone familiar with this???), which i 'bluetacked' to a wall and everyone found it a very useful reference.

I actually like the idea of card handouts if (as noted by others) they didn't reveal the locations that the players should be going to without their own investigation.

Anyway, thanks to 'Ynnen' for listening to my little rant & for putting the handouts on the support page - it's appreciated.

Long live Warhammer FRP!!!!

Hell yeah. Best city sourcebook ever!

As for the Gathering Storm maps, it's great to have the PDFs. But at the same time it's a shame that we can't share these beautiful maps with the players. The censored versions really only have the labels rubbed out, but still show all the hidden features. I understand that removing labels is a lot cheaper than making a separate map with unique art for the players. But personally, I'd have preferred a really cool looking map for the players and some ugly scribbles for the GM.
