Mag-Pulse Warheads

What's everyone's thoughts on them?

Personally I'm very on the fence with them. They have power with the jam and deplete effects, if they nail someone that needs, say a lock to do an effect it can be great, as well as taking making an opponent spend focus to avoid it as they'd rather keep for an attack (and would lose it anyway if it hit). On the negative it's going to thwack 'relatively' harmlessly off shields, and even landing it on an unshielded target, and putting the crit on, doesn't seem as good as say... a 3 or 4 die attack.

With that in mind, I think they are perfect for high Init ships, and less valuable on the lower end. (Though I played a friend that used an M3a swarm with them that kept me from ever just 'keeping' a lock on something. ) I'm thinking if you don't mind your I6 starting the fireworks with a love tap as opposed to a haymaker it's not to bad, especially if you can then follow up with oh say...a bunch of passive, concussion S/Fs.

Still I'm personally torn. I want lots of red dice right out of the gate and take ships out before my opponent can even shoot in the Init order.

Best on TIE/sf, for sure, but nice to have on RZ2s as well.

Basically a weapon upgrade for 6 points out the front, and most valuably, out the back.

So meta flexible it's kinda ridiculous.

Compared to Ions, which accomplish a similar effect of "throw more dice and get that hit...and maybe ion something", the Mags (when hit):

-Jam off that pesky optics focus or that FCS lock the other guy really really needs and forces their action economy downward.

-Makes a ship think twice about their maneuver next round with a red deplete token or helps mute the damage from their next shot.

-Potentially cripple an ace with any number of damage deck horrors, which again, usually forces more hard choices on your opponent.

It's the perfect control weapon right now, in my opinion.

I've been toying with the idea of slapping it on a Hyperspace Vader or Vonreg.

As I’ve posted elsewhere: Scum Han can use ‘em good, especially in conjunction with Clusters Torani.

Can an RZ2 really fire these backwards? That's brilliant if it's the case, but I thought it was front arc only.

No. With range 1-3, it does give RZ2s two guaranteed front shots regardless of where they've got their turret.

It's the SFs that can shoot munitions out the back.

I feel like they do best when the Jam is leveraged. For example, if you're able to strip a Darth Vader or other TIE/x1 or TIE/v1 of their Lock, that's probably brutal. Jendon Inquisitors or Vader going down to a 1-die attack from a 3-dice attack would be immense.

Anyone at high Init who is fairly cheap should be able to do OK with them. I wonder if Tomax Bren with them is worth it... Init 5 and he can roll into a Lock. Seems OK. Scum Han also seems like a great pick.

Overall, however... they don't seem super strong. Maybe it will be impactful over time to put a lot of Depletes onto something, but I'm skeptical. Mostly, I think if you get enough attacks on someone to add a meaningful level of Depletes, you should have just been using Concussion Missiles and killed them. :P Like Ion, control weapons can be nice, but they've got to be backed up by actual damage in order to win over time.

High Initiative ships can be brutal with them. I am toying with the idea of Mag-Pulse Warheads + Heightened Perception Grand Inquisitor. You can I7 someone with a Lock and Force to mod the shot. Strip them for the Brother and Sister to go to pound town on them.

  • Grand Inquisitor: Heghtened Perception, Mag-Pulse Warheads, Fire-Control System
  • Fifth Brother: Fire-Control System
  • Seventh Sister: Fire-Control System
  • "Duchess": Predator

Leaves 4 points to do something with. Can swap Predator for Elusive and slap "Duchess" with Targeting Computer for 200/200.
