What online resource is this game missing?

By duffn, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi!

I've recently taken over maintenance of swsheets.com . And while I've been working on some features, fixing bugs, and have much more planned, I'd also like to build something completely new.

The thing is, while I have some ideas, I'm not entirely sure what that should be! So I'm soliciting suggestions.

I don't develop mobile apps, so what web based application do you think the game is missing? What application or resource would be valuable for you when you are playing or GMing? What do you wish you had that would make your SWRPG experience more enjoyable?

I'm itching to build something new, so look forward to any suggestions you may have!

Well, one fix you can make is fix the image URL feature. It’s no longer accepting DeviantArt images since DeviantArt’s latest update.

the Two obvious things I can think of are:

  1. Have a web version of something like OggDudes generator, which applies all the actual rules as you’re building the character, instead of just giving you fields to fill out. That could build on top os the existing swsheets system, or be something separate. But it’s a really big lift.
  2. Have an exhaustive concordance that is easy to add material to for people who are not web developers. The Viluppo index was trying to be something like this, but it’s a pain to add stuff, which is part of why I haven’t added anything new there for many months. It’s just too much work. But you don’t want a full wookieepedia style site for adding general content, instead you want something more specialized.

That’s the two major things I can think of.

Ogg dudes is built the way it is because of copyright law. An Online builder would have to be a licensed product and FFG doesn’t have a license for “electronic” Star Wars games, EA does.

I’m aware of the limitations. I’ve been using OggDudes program off and on for about as long as it’s been around. Having a proper web-based version of that program, even if it had all the other same copyright limitations, is still what I consider to be a major missing element. The fact that I’m forced to run Windows to use it is really a major problem for me, for reasons I’ve covered in these forums over the past several years.

Yeah I run ogg dudes in a virtual machine. I have been thinking about setting up a vm with one of the cloud providers so I can access it from my iPad. A web front end would be superior in my opinion to a desktop program.

I’ve been spoiled by herolab.online.

I have run it in a VM on my MacBook Pro laptop, but that sucked way too much power. I have since run it on an ec2 instance in AWS, and more recently on AWS Workspaces. But none of those solutions work well. They’re horribly bad, in fact. It all comes down to Windows just plain sucks like almost nothing else on this planet.

Some forms of cancer are better than being forced to live with Windows — and I say this as a cancer survivor, so I have first hand experience.

is it just me or is the big lists that told you what book gear and stuff was in is no longer working?

An up-to-date version of OggDude's character generator :(

I use the Star Wars Adversaries site plenty, but with the new Starships and Speeders coming out it would be nice to have a similar resource for vehicles. Or Weapons (see Gear and Gadgets).

Stoogoff's code is available at github. So it wouldn't be hard to do.

OrcPub and DungeonMasterVault for D&D 5e are based on data files provided by the user. The sites only provide the official d&d SRD data but you can import XML file for your homebrew or whatever data you want in the tool.

Something similar may be done : no data are provided by SWSheets but you can import files to populate the tool. The file do not even need to be stored online. OrcPub and DMV limit the data persistence of the uploaded file to the current user session.

Yeah, the Viluppo site went down. I’m not sure what’s going on there. But I will check into it. I don’t own it, but I am on the Patreon, and I have some limited admin access there, at least when it’s working.

Thanks for the reminder!

That’s basically the way OggDudes program works. He gives you the basic core files that are scraped from the tables (and therefore arguably not copyrightable), but if you want the extended fluff, then you either have to provide that yourself or find someone who has a private copy of the unofficial fluff extras who is willing to give you a copy.

I didn't realize that was a piece of functionality with viluppo!

1. I've heard this request before. It would be quite the undertaking indeed, but duly noted!

2. I've launched something like this only moments ago at https://theouterrim.co/

There is no non-developer way to add things at the moment (though it is open source and available on GitHub and things can be added there), but this is a good idea.

Well, for one, they changed their media platform service . They now use wixmp . Their old media platform was compatible with SWSheets, for some reason, wixmp is not.

Can you share an image that you are having trouble with?

Nice! I like the way you can drag categories to the top header and group by them.

However, your numerical sorting is off. Sorting by Rarity currently goes 0 < 1 < 10 < 2. Oops! 🤣

I will definitely be looking to add a lot more data to this system, if you can make that process simple and easy for non-developers.

Thanks for checking out the site and thanks for the bug report! Oops indeed!

I'm working on a process now for adding new content. It may just be a Google Sheet to start with hopefully something better in the future. I'll post back when it's ready.

Rarity sorting fixed. Thanks for the bug report. 🙂

Perfect, that is definitely preferred.

Looks like you finally got them working. What's you do?

I was having problems with all of them. the first time I noticed a problem was when I was creating this character and tried to load this image URL into it. When I did so, it would put up "Placeholder image". I later noticed this same "Placeholder Image" with all of my characters. Now, they seem t be back up. How'd it?

I wish I could claim victory here, but I didn’t do anything.

Do you have Privacy Badger, Ghostery or a similar extension in your browser? They can sometimes decide to block images from some sources.
