Expansion Duplicates: Pretty but purposeful??

By SithLrd88, in Star Wars: Armada

Hello All,

I at one point had seen someone say they liked to buy enough duplicates of a ship to match the number of title cards said ship had. I played this out in my head, and while it would be amazingly cool to have 5 ISDs and 3 each of MC80, Liberty, Onagers, Starhawk, etc. How practical is it? I've seen people with ridiculously large fleets, but you could never utilize all that except in either sector fleet battles or huge custom games.

I entered Armada a couple waves in (3/4), so I never needed 3 gladiators or space potatoes for complete games.I have one of every expansion (2x flotillas). I until recently have only liked the idea of duplicates for recreating Battles (Endor/Scariff/Jakku/etc.).

If you have a huge fleet, does it see use, or is it more of a pretty collection, which I'm still jealous of?

I never run the same fleet twice* so my large collection all sees use quite regularly, and when its not its on display (all the models are being repainted to a custom fleet)

*outside of campaign or tournament play

I have a huge fleet but I typically always play at 700 or more points.

My recommendation is to make that decision by ship once you play with it a few times. I like to play lists (mostly in casual games) that are all of the same ship, so I look at how many I can reasonably fit in a list (with upgrades). While running Triple Cymoons, Triple Liberties, or 7 x Ackbar TRC90s are really fun (and sometimes competitive), I have never enjoyed playing more than two Gladiators or Peltas in a list. If you plan on playing Sector Fleet, I would grab a third flotilla eventually. I also loan out a lot of ships to newer players, so if you are building a community, that might be a consideration.

I’ve always loved small ship lists, at one point I had five glads, seven raiders and so on, scaled back to about 3 of each now.

I typically plan on buying at least two of each expansion. With a few exceptions. I have three of a few ships and 4 nebs (cause they were on a crazy sale on Amazon. I think I paid $9 each for three of them. I enjoy trying all kinds of different things. 3 interdictors, 5 Neb b's...

In general I think two of some she's is totally worth it.

There are ships that are useful in big numbers, like CR90s, MC30s, Gladiators or Arquitens. Those are always nice run in pairs or threes or fours.

A triple ISD list is certainly fun to play time and again, just as a triple Victory list.

Fixed for you ;)

Little bit more seriously, neb bs get exponentially better the more of them there are, being able to cover each others weak spots (you dont have to be a genius to spot those weak spots lol) and being able to throw a decent volume of dice

(Totally dont own 7 of them.)

5 Nebulons is the correct number. Add TRC and Aux Shield Team, plus a CR90 with TRC and Jaina's Light. Leia commander. 396pts of awesome firepower.

2 turns to kill any large ship, 1 if you get all 5 with double arcs.

I've taken out an SSD in 2 turns, but that needed very lucky dice rolls.

Heavy squadrons wreck them, as do very skilled opponents with CR90s.

I have pretty much 2 of each save for the Onager, Starhawk and phoenix home and home one. 3 ISD's and 5 VSDs might be a bit of vanity but 3 arquitens and 4 raiders have actually used. Do want to some day do the battle of Atollon with my own stuff.

My collection is as follows (and is probably as large as I'd functionally want it to be (apart from the SSD, which I promise myself I will buy one day) (I.e. I can't see any real Value in adding any more duplicates to it at this stage).

2 ISD (1 regular, 1 Chimera)
2 VSD
2 Interdictor
1 Quasar
1 Onager
1 Gladiator (you could possibly argue for a 2nd one here, but I've never missed not having 2)
3 Arquitens
3 Raider
3 Gozanti (bought the third one before the rules update)
2 Squadrons 1
2 Squadrons 2
2 Rogues & Villains (is that the right name? I'm not sure)

No rebel ships in the collection besides core set & the rebel squadrons you get I the rogues pack. Although I have been to the secondary market to pick up some of the rebel ship upgrade cards.

You could by all means argue for extra ships - 1 more ISD, 2 more VSD, 1 more Quasar, 1 more Gladiator, many more Arquitens & raiders.... But I think at the stage I am, those kind of purchases would hit some serious diminishing returns on value - to the point where even though I could justify them from a completionist point of view, it's not really a wise purchase. So where I'm at is mostly where I've chosen to stop (barring new releases ofc)

Buying second hand makes for some fairly random collections.

I have: 6 Nebulons, 5 CR90s, 4 Hammerheads, 2 MC30, 2 AF2, 2 MC75, 1 LMC80, 1 H1MC80, 1 Pelta, 2 GR75. 2 Rebel Fighter 1, 1 RF2, 2 R&V plus an extra YT2400.

1 SSD, 3 ISD (1 Chimaera), 3 VSD, 2 Glad, 2 Raider, 1 Interdictor, 2 Arquitens, 1 Quasar, 2 Gozanti, 2 Imp F1, 1 IF2, 2 R&V plus 3 extra decimators.

And an Onager on pre-order awaiting a Starhawk for me to have them.

I haven't yet used my H1, Pelta, either Assault Frigate, 1 of the MC30s, one of the Gladiators, one of the Raiders, 2 of the CR90s, 1 Nebulon, any flotilla, or the Interdictor.

I have at least 2 of everything and 3 of most, but I also advertise my plastic crack addiction, I will not really be satisfied until I have the 30 ISDs required to recreate the battle of Endor. Up to 11 so far. ;)

Other than that, I don't consider any duplicates ostentatious if I can fit them in both sides of a mirror match, in a 800 pt battle, or if they are really fun to paint.

Fortunately ISDs, Neb-Bs & VSDs are some of the most fun ships to paint.

I would say both yes and no. I have been collecting singles of most the imperial expansions, and I can say that it is really great to have the extreme versatility of all the ships. But if you are playing against someone who has multiples of something, even just 2 nebulons. You can be out done pretty easily with fleet construction. Especially with the imperials because a single ship can cost so much more than rebel ships.

So my final answer would be maybe 1 or 2 of each ship, but probably never more than that. Maybe 3 imperials total counting Chimaera for the occasional super battle. Other than that no more than 2 of one ship in my opinion.

How could anyone possibly answer the question: How many of each is enough?

It depends so much on what you like to play. As OP said, what is useful in lists besides of playing Sector Fleet games? That narrows things down but you'll still get a lot of different answers to the question, what is useful in 400 pts. standard games. In my eyes it's the following amounts of ships, ranging from "needed" (if playing this faction) to "niche" (only very rarely used).

Rebels (in order of appearance)

CR90 : 1-2 needed / 3 good / 4 okay / 5-9 niche
Neb-B : 1-2 needed / 3-6 niche
AF II : 1 needed / 2 okay / 3-5 niche
MC30c : 1-2 needed / 3-5 niche
MC80-H1 : 1 needed / 2-3 niche
GR-75 : 1-2 needed / 3+ illegal
MC80-L : 1 needed / 2-3 niche
Pelta : 1 good / 2 okay / 3-6 niche
Hammerheads : 1 needed / 2-3 good / 4-9 niche [ships not EP]
MC75 : 1 needed / 2 good / 3 niche
Nadiri Starhawk : 1 okay / 2 niche [haven't played it yet]

Imperials (in order of appearance)

Vic : 1 needed / 2 okay / 3-5 niche
Raider : 1-2 needed / 3-6 niche
ISD : 1 needed / 2 okay / 3 niche
Gozanti : 1-2 needed / 3+ illegal
Interdictor : 1 good / 2-3 niche
Arquitens : 1-2 needed / 3 good / 4-7 niche
Quasar : 1 needed / 2-7 niche
Chimaera : 1 good / 2-3 niche [better to buy another ISD EP, than a second Chimaera]
SSD : 1 good / 2+ illegal
Onager : 1 needed / 2-3 niche [haven't played it yet]

[I only recommend the ships, not the cards of the expansion packs.]

I think the post of @Triangular says it all and summs up everything pretty well.

Of course the amount of ships should somehow match your playing-style.

Nevertheless, none of us has bought everything at the same time - so it makes sense to buy stuff bit by bit depending on what you like and see where to adjust 😉
