Standing a participating character

By Fancy B, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

1. Ok, I ran into an odd situation the other day. My friend attacks me with a character who has both Wildling Mead and Seafarer's Bow attached. After I declare defenders, he uses Wildling Mead to stand his character and then kneels the character and Seafarer's Bow to add 4 STR to himself. This seems a bit odd to me but I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work. Is there any rule against standing characters who are currently participating in a challenge like this?

2. Also, my friend has Blood of the Dragon (gives +6 STR while attached character is "participating in a challenge" ) attached to the Khal Drogo who kills people with lower STR than him. Can Khal Drogo effectively kill anyone on the board or does the "participating in a challenge" limitation mess this combo up?

Why does it seem odd? Characters can attack or defend without kneeling, so participation in a challenge does not actually depend on being in a kneeling state. So why should standing them with an effect that does not specifically remove them from the challenge seem so weird? There are no rules that say standing a character automatically removes from a challenge.

Responses to winning/losing the challenge technically take place within the duration of the challenge. So yes, he is still participating and the +6 STR is still good. Note that this is pretty much within the text of his ability: "Response: After you win a POW challenge in which Khal Drogo is participating , choose and kill 1 character with lower STR than Khal Drogo."

It works just fine. Look at the reprint of Frozen Outpost from Lords of Winter it works in defence but has the same principle.

Challenges: Kneel Frozen Outpost to choose and stand 1 defending character. Until the end of the challenge, that character gets +2 STR (+4 STR instead if it is a W character).

The boost still aplies during the time when you can play his response since the responce is still part of the challenge (step 5) and the challenge ends in step 6 as describen in FAQ - site 17 - The Framework Action Window.

Oh no, ktom has beaten me. I was too slow...

Ok, thanks a lot guys. I don't know why, but it just seemed weird to me and my friends that you could stand and use a guy who is currently attacking. I was pretty sure Blood of the Dragon would work for this but was hoping otherwise; I hate losing a bunch of power on Robert Baratheon in this manner haha. Thanks again for the speedy replies guys.
