Another what to buy next?

By BrownCoat84, in X-Wing

Howdy! I just picked up a 2.0 core set after playing the game with my brother and getting hooked. Now I’m wondering what expansions to get?

I’m interested in Rebels, Imperials and Scum.

I’ve looked at the standard XYAB. Picking up a TIE/Int, Advanced, and/or Defender. Then there is always Slave 1 with a Z-95, or the Houndstooth pack.

There are so many options, I’m just looking for a good starting direction.

So I went ahead and picked up a Y-wing, another X-wing, and a B-wing for my Rebel faction.

For my imperial faction, I grabbed the Tie Advanced, and Tie Striker.

I would vote for getting the TIE Adv Prototype. I really like that ship.

I don't like the TIE Striker; all the movement schennanigans are more than I want to do for beer & pretzels play.

But, that's a little bit of the thing: fly what you have, and decide what fits your style the most.

The Hive Mind can help more if you say: "I love B-Wings. What's next?"

If you like the 3 old factions, it could be a great idea to look for someone selling their old First Edition collection, and a set of conversion kits.

You will end up with a lot of ships and upgrades for much less money than retail would cost.

Funny you should say that. I do love B-wings. I have no idea how they fly in this game, but I loved the in computer games of the past.

I appreciate the tip Azrapse. That might be a good way for me to build out my scum faction. Rebels and Imperials are easy to start from with a core 2.0 set.

I honestly picked up the X-wing expansion for Wedge.

I really recommend an Awing if you do not have it yet.

Also - going to go a bit off the beaten path and say pick up Saw’s Renegades and the Falcon! Lando is a great pilot, and Han is alright too. The renegades was the transition period of 1.0 and 2.0, so ignore the dead 1.0 cards but enjoy the Uwing and extra alt paint t65! More on the U in a second...

Lastly, look into the upgrade card pack they just released called Hotshots and Aces: it’ll get you a new Bwing pilot, Leia piloting the falcon, and K2SO!! Yes you can throw K2 new pilot on that Uwing, or have K2 crew on the falcon.

Slave 1 is one of the smoothest ships in the game. its fun to fly, good in most metas, and can be as much of a list as you want it to be, from 62 to 120ish points. very good in game value for your money too. Falcon is similar if you go Rebels. The Defender and Advanced are awesome value too though more role locked as a result of less upgrade options and locked arcs.

Personally I would pick your favorite of those 4 and go that faction first before eventually blowing a years sallary on 2 of everything

For Rebel I’d say pick up another B-wing and an A-wing and you’ll have enough to put together some XXBB or XBBA or throw the Y-wing in. Those lists can be very good if you look at what pilots people are flying together.

For Imps, you’re all over at this point. You probably want to look at flying triple aces with Vader in the Advanced, one of the Striker aces and then pick up maybe an Interceptor for Soontir or the Prototype for Inquisitor. Or you can get more ties and fly an ace plus a mini swarm.

If you’re going to start scum, the Firespray is your entry point. Also very good right now. Then I’d say get a Fang and you can already run a great list with just those two ships. Maybe then a second fang or a few other ships depending on what catches your eye as the aces lists are cheap entry, but can be difficult to fly because they don’t leave a lot of room for error. Lists like your beefy four-ship Rebels will feel much more forgiving as you’re learning the game.

Try to build a 200 point list for a single faction first before buying into another faction. If you piecemeal buy a few ships of this faction & that faction you’ll end up with a lot of pretty ships but not a decent set of them to give you a competitive list in any of the factions. Eventually you’ll want to enter a store tournament. The other benefit is that you can focus on a single list and get proficient with it. I think learning how to fly a single list over time with upgrade modification changes here and there are better than flying a drastically different list every game.

Great insight Pakirby. I’ve wanted to quickly build up my rebel and imperial factions so that I can play with my brother since he has a core set, but no expansions. They way we both have plenty of options and two effective factions to choose from when we play.

And Darth Meanie, I like the idea of the striker having some movement shenanigans when it comes to beer and pretzel play. It might give me a fairer footing with my brother! 😊

I know my next buy is going to be the Aces pack and 2 TIE/ba’s whenever the supplier decides to ship them to my LGS

My advice would be, if you’re playing casual, proxy everything. Once you’re hooked and you need to go all Pokémon and catch all the ships for your collection, it won’t matter so much. But buying in early can be overwhelming, it’s easier if you proxy, find what you like and then buy. It can save some early buyer regret.

Thanks for the insight Archangel. I can see some early buyers remorse when it comes to Scum. Very interesting faction, but also very situational from what I understand when it comes to what is more effective.

I just realised this hasn't been linked here yet, you may find it useful

For scum I'd say 1 firespray, 1 fang and at least 1 scyk is a great starting point (sunny+fenn+boba)

Wow Gadwad! That is an awesome resource!

I’ve seen a lot of great feedback on most of the ships, but what about the ROC and Corellian Corvette?

Edited by BrownCoat84

Same as my previous post here. Get the corvette and C-ROC (and Raider and all the others) from first edition boxes and buy the Huge Conversion Kit. Best value for your money.
Keep in mind that huge ships are only used in casual modes like Epic and scenarios.

I have a question that might also help the OP that I was about to ask.

What's the deal with Scum Lando Falcon? Is it a ship worth having? For a non collector or completist player, what does the ship offer? I see much more options and forum talk about the other big based ship (notably the Shadowcaster, but also Hound's tooth). I only ocasionally see the drone ship as a filler in some lists... What does this ship bring to your player experience that is worthaving and is not covered by other ships?

(Disregard Hyperspace or Extended legality on this question, or general tournament oriented tier reasoning.)

From the scum page of the buying guide linked above:

Quote
Customised YT-1300 Freighter (Wave 1)
Hard to Fly, Weak
Escape Craft (Wave 1)
Easy to fly, Average
Sadly, Lando's Falcon is not very impressive on the table. Han hasn't upgraded the turrets to quad lasers yet and thus Lando's ship is stuck with a measly two attack dice and that really takes a massive chunk of how useful it actually is. While Han Solo pilot can theoretically roll absurd numbers of dice on obstructed attacks the Falcon's large base makes it very difficult to tuck in behind rocks. This expansion isn't a complete waste, though, as it features some excellent crew upgrades and a handy support ship - the Escape Craft.
You have to buy a whole Falcon to get it but the Escape Craft craft is the best support ship available to Scum. L337 can hand out actions to whoever needs them most, and she can shoot a bit too while she's at it. Many Scum squads feature a single escape craft feeding actions to another ship with bigger guns. Fans of jank and explosions can also bring the autopilot drone which is wired to go boom 3 turns into the game.

Good. Fly the heck out of it. Your Ailerons pre-move Boost will really get you used to thinking in a way that is good when you start flying ace-y ships and they are more threatening than TIE Fighters. I think the Striker is probably one of the best Imperial ships to practice with, especially coordinating a focus-fire engagement from different angles.
