Too Many Cards

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

A few people have alluded to not keeping every card. If you haven’t said so already, what’s your personal magic number?

I think a recent purchase is going to tip me over 8 total copies of some cards. Should that be where I stop (given the 8-ship limit)?

I would like to play epic at some point, but even then it seems unlikely that I’d be using the same upgrade more than 8 times.

If you run 2 full wings of something, you might hit 12. That's pretty much a max for any kind if standard play.

For normal 200 pt games you will not need more than 8 copies of anything as 8 ships is indeed the max.

But of most upgrades you will even need to carry around less for 200 pt games as 8 ships leaves very little room if any for upgrades and those ships usually are the versions that don't have talent slots etc.

To gaming nights I only carry the lists I have prepared as I am not taking 100+ ships with me anyway. Then I have sleeved and sorted the number of copies I reckon I will use max in lists. For example 5 Blue squadron escort x-wing cards, but only 4 red squadron veterans x-wing cards as only 4 fit in a list. 6 Crackshots, only 3x Hate etc.

The rest is unsleeved, but also sorted so if points change or I aqcuire my 7th Tie LN via a 1st edition version, I can easily find those extra cards and also sleeve them up.

4-8 copies, depending on how many I think i'll need at hand, and if I've gone through my extras lately.

Honestly? I make 2-3 lists ahead of time and only take that. My game time is limited so I don’t want to waste 30 min plus on assembling a list, never mind trying to choose from everything.

In my area people increasingly just bring ships, dials, tokens, deck, dice & a printout of their squad with the card text on it. Some just bring their phone with yasb/LBN, damage deck & dice.

I run events and such and sometimes need more. For example, I'm running a few games at GenCon where I will need to supply 6 lists for Epic Battles that are 400 points! I will need the cards, or might need.

I would be ok with this. I just want to be able to enjoy the card art and I know I’d screw up damage dispersal on a print out unless it was like that old 1.0 builder with images of cards.

You really don't need more than eight copies of any given card, and even then that's pushing it.

We have created an extras box at our local game store. This way anyone can pick up/leave upgrades as needed. I typically carry between 2-8 of a particular upgrade depending on usage/normative point cost.

You can do the same thing for asteroids, other tokens.

I have gotten 4 of the 5 conversion kits. I have the boxed set. I just bought the 3 new card packs. I am having a hard time with storing all these cards! I just had to buy a new card box that was longer to hold all the new cards I have. It's getting crazy. Yes, I don't have to carry all the cards I own everywhere I go, but I do. I don't know what I'm going to play and that one time I'm going to need those 20 Concussion Missiles I have then I'm going to realize that I forgot to grab that box with all the crap I never bring.

Anyone else having this issue? I also have a lot of asteroids at this point with so many boxed sets.

I have card binders that I keep 4 to 8 copies of all the cards in. Each faction has its own binder, so I just have one bin (or a few binders) that I grab if I’m making a list at the store. Anything over what I carry is in a card box at home.

I learned to hate organizing cards with binders back in the days of Magic. Something new comes out and you have to re-org the whole thing. I have found I prefer the card box.

....that's if you are only playing 200 pt lists. If you are going to provide more than one list or are going to play more than 200 pts, you might.

Jaysus. You have a curator for that stuff?

Anyway, I'm an insane maniac who does pre-build lists, but doesn't pre-assemble them incase I feel like playing something when I finally get to game night after work. I'm also a maniac who purchased 2 of each conversion kit for Rebel, Imperial and Scum, and 1 for Resistance and First Order. I have a lot of spares....and I mean a LOT of spares. With just the first 3 factions, it took me 3 days to effectively sort, sleeve and get everything all properly bagged up.

My fellow gamers laughed at me, laughed I say! I was the one laughing when after a month they still hadn't sorted their stuff and were scrambling to find everything. Mwahahaha!....

Anyway...

My upgrade folder is stuffed. I used to calculate how many cards of one type I could fit in a list. Essentially I'd open up a list builder, pick the cheapest ship that upgrade can go on and then just...copy copy copy until I got past 200 points. I'd then put that many cards in my upgrade folder. Do the same for ships.

However, with my folder becoming very very VERY bulky. I needed to shed weight, and do I really need to have 7 copies of Elusiveness when I've probably used that card once? Nah.

That being said, the spares have found my way into an 'epic' folder. Which basically is a mish-mash of anything that exceeds the number for 200 point game.

Well s**t, I forgot about Epic...

I have a binder labelled proton torpedoes

I tossed out a solid half of my upgrades box last night.

I mean, if you are not playing a lot of tournament play do you really need multiple copies of each card for duplicates in your list? Definitely need the pilot cards but I think if you were to slim down and then just say "all of these have concs as well I have this one here if you need to read it" should be ok?

In the end, this is definitely the right problem to have. If they didn't give us so many can you imagine the cries of "THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE ME BUY MORE THINGS BURN THEM BURN THEM" that would be happening?
