Damaging a destroyed ship to pay a cost

By Wazat, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If I have Ruthless or Saw Gerrera crew, and the ship I want to damage for the ability is already destroyed, I can still do it right? I thought I saw some ruling that I couldn't, but that was a long time ago and that may have been 1E or just my imagination.

After pouring through the rules I can't find anything that says I can't, but I want to make sure. Someone asked on the wiki today, and I also want to know for my own games.

Thanks!

Yes! As long as it’s still on the board!!! 😁 Same for Biggs.

PS one of the downsides of Phasma’s ability.

Cool, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some worlds TO ruling or an obscure rule that would have prevented it.

Just some notes to help.

RR pg 9

Quote

A destroyed ship’s abilities remain active until that ship is removed unless the ability specifies a different timing for the effect to end, such as “until the end of the Engagement Phase.” Such effects remain active until the end of the specified time.

Basically meaning, the ship is still "there" until the initiative is over, for whatever effects to happen. Its pilot ability, Tac Scrambler, shifting damage to it, whatever.

Yea, that matches my own research. I asked because I had been told once before that there was some ruling saying you had to have some hull left to be allowed to take damage as an ability cost, but I believe that was an erroneous ruling. It hasn't appeared in the official rulings thread or in the RR. I just wanted to know if anyone could back it up, or if it was indeed incorrect.

Thanks!

I believe that's a carryover from First Edition , notably the ability of Darth Vader (crew). I vaguely recall a ruling which stated (roughly) that you could only trigger Vader's ability if you had at least 2 health remaining on your ship; you COULD kill yourself with his ability, but only if the FIRST damage suffered wasn't lethal.

(Or maybe I'm all wrong, but that's what I recall)

That sounds familiar., and that's probably what they were basing it on, so it's definitely old and outdated.

Thanks!

Yep, its in the 1E FAQ. Under his ruling. First line.

So, Not only was that a 1E ruling (not applying to 2E) it also appears to have been a specific ruling for Vader.
