What's the most fun?

By irdonny, in Star Wars: Legion

Hey all, new player here (play x-wing and have decided to dabble in Legion). I have the core set and one each of Scout troopers and Rebel commandos. Just sort of picked them up without too much research beyond the base game.

What is you favorite expansion for casual games? (not planning on entering competitive). Just want to have fun with the game, build full army for each side, and am investing in to both factions so I cant go too crazy. Let me know what I should grab!

This is the definition of Crazy ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I think the operatives give a lot of fun variance in the game. Are you planning on skirmish (500pts) or the full game (800pts)?

I like another core set for an 800pt army just for more bang for the buck. I like the Shore troopers and veterans just because they add some different mechanics and have 2 different corps troops included. Deathtroopers are super effective as Imperial specials.

I didn't know there were 500 point skirmishes. Was planning to build.up to 800. Are the rules in the core book, or just online? And do you think you have more fun with 500 or 800?

I was planning on picking up at least one operative per faction, trying to decide who. Sabine looks cool, was also thinking krennick. Any thoughts on operatives? Most fun? Best mechanics?

The book in the core sets is the learn to play booklet, the full rules are online along with the Skirmish rules: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/star-wars-legion/

Sabine is a blast, sometimes literally. Flying, exploding, etc. Her versatility keeps her fun. Chewbacca has a trick for almost every leader and is generally a tough bugger.

Krennic is a commander, not an operative. Boba Fett looks like fun for a lot of the same reasons Sabine is, they just have a lot of tricks. With what you have now, you can build 500 point lists to start and play a little before your next purchase. One thing you may want to consider are the less expensive commanders (Leia for rebels and Krennic or Veers for Imperial) to loosen up your options at the skirmish level. Get a few games in before you go on a buying spree.

Personally, I love mines. I play rebels so commandos for me, imperial scouts for imperials. The snipers are probably better but I love mining up the field. And Sabine, she is the best.

Also, look at the FAQ, there have been some point changes, the weapons on the AT-RT leap to mind.

That's good to know, thanks

And Sabine will probably be my rebel pick for an operative, and probably Boba for imps.

But yeah, definitely a few games first, have one starter game down (got so many rules wrong, like treating dodge tokens and re-rolls and not knowing I could double move for actions) and have a few games planned for monday that i will probably do starter game rules again to introduce my buddy to the game, buy then I'm excited to get in to squad building and testing

So far I haven't found a configuration for Sabine I did not enjoy.

Donโ€™t bother to look at the FAQ, you will get bored. Just use the Tabletop Admiral , itโ€™s much easier and smoother.

2nd core set and Specialists box for both sides.

I highly recommend starting at the 500 point skirmish level. You can just get one box of a bunch of different things and mix and match to get a good feel of the game. Because its smaller you can get more games in during the course of a night and there are less models which means less rules interactions so definitely new person friendly. An e-web is always a fun addition in my book for casual games and they are cheap dollar wise to boot!

Specialists for both sides is fun. New minis to paint.

Same for the brand new troop upgrade packs (stormtrooper and rebel trooper). Alien sculpts! And new variety for stormies!

I think priority supplies expansion is super fun, if for no other reason than immersion. Objectives like recover the supplies or intercept the transmissions now have an actual object that feels Star Wars and isnโ€™t just a flat token. The bonus objective about moisture vaporators is, well, bonus! Plus they look good.

Wait, that is what is best in life. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ohhhh yeah... I forgot about Priority Supplies, Downed AT-ST, and Escape Pod. Those are also high on my list of fun recommendations.

Bear in mind I'm the guy who doesn't actually play with 2 core sets, cause I use 6x snowtroopers or 2x Rebel Veterans with mkII's, and then liberally apply e-webs, tauntauns, AT-ST's and snowspeeders. I do own not-Hoth armies as well but can't remember the last time I used them.

not sure what most fun i play all four and i think may favorite rebel unit veterans, favorite empire is royal guards, well not much say on republic yet, but cis i love playing the count

but it all fun

"Members of my escort have completed assembly of an E-Web heavy repeating blaster. If you are unfamiliar with this weapon, I am sure that Republican Shock Trooper Carasynthia Dune of Alderaan will advise you that she has witnessed many of her ranks vaporize mid-descent facing the predecessor of this particular model." If investing in two is crazy then what am I for investing in all 4

Does the skirmish level support the various missions including with the core set as well? Or is it just about most points killed in the 6 rounds?

Neither; there are alternative cards similar to the ones in the core set but set up for 3x3 format. Those alternative cards can be found in the pdf of skirmish mode.

Slightly tangential but related to the OP: Probs buying in soon with the OT Core, Death Troopers, and Rebel Commandos. Curious if Scout Troopers or Commandos are remotely usable as a full squad or if it's pretty strictly strike teams?

Starting with just Skirmish and hoping to expand very very slowly (I'm heavily invested in X-Wing and moderately into Marvel: Crisis Protocol and don't want to pace myself out ๐Ÿ˜ง ). Will probably go Sabine/Fett after that, then whatever takes my fancy (Imperial Tank, Scout Troopers, Shoretroopers, Pathfinders, anything but Hoth stuff for thematic reasons).
