Hyped About X-Wing Again Because Hyperspace Is Amazing

The only thing Extended has that doesn't exist in Hyperspace is pre-maneuver repositioning. But in the first place it's priced out of core viability into fringe viability (as it should be) and in the second place there's a lot of counterplay to it that didn't exist in viable lists before.

Strikers say hello!

I'm stuck between "Hyperspace is amazing" and "Hyperspace is meh", oddly enough. I love that so much is pared away to encourage different lists, but I also see that how to win seems to devolve to fly Boba or fly 5+ ships.

I agree

The diversity of options within Hyperspace is staggering. I don't think my “List of Lists to Test” has ever been longer than this since 2.0 released. I have never been less sure about which lists are actually good, fine, or bad. Looking forward to playing Hyperspace for many years to come. I hope its here to stay and remains this well curated. Maybe one day it can be used as the worlds format to.

Our locals across the board pretty much prefer Hyperspace by this point. We average 12 to 16 for our casual nights and it keeps growing. IMO Hyperspace has alot to do with it; the game is more accessible, and resolves a bit more efficiently it seems. It really illustrates how good the core game is when less still feels like more.

This thread popped back into my head when i realized last night this is the most excited i've been about x wing in years, for the first time in years I am making genuine efforts to get as many games in as possible, and talk about the game as much as i possibly can.

I enjoy playing x-wing. Any and all formats: extended, Hyperspace, Epic (Aces to 2000+pts per side), HotAC, custom, wacky, teams, etc.

But, when the last HS rules came out, I struggled to find a list I wanted to take to the System Open. I generally fly Rebels or Imperials, with a generous smattering of Scum and an occasional use of the newer 4, however none of my normal favourites felt right. I missed Wedge and the Decimator crew options, for example, and without them each list I made felt like a weaker version of something I preferred.

So, I went through the ships available and found one I'd never ever flown: Dengar. I'd avoided him when he was powerful in 1st ed because I hated facing him and didn't want to add to his prevalence. Then there were so many other ships and pilots to try out once 2nd ed started. And he was terrible. :)

So, newly inspired, I put a list together last Thursday, played 2 games with it, and enjoyed the SO a lot. Dengar, Fenn, 2 Scyks. 3 Ion Cannons. 3-3, but all the games were fun.

Now I want to try out some of the cool lists I saw being used!

I’m getting there, I really am. Not super pumped for it yet, but I’m passed my initial bleh and looking forward to getting some hyperspace games in with my A-Wings.

One slight point of order, however, directed at @svelok . I love your enthusiasm and I love it whenever anyone is having a blast with X-Wing. However, I have to categorically disagree that Ace + Squad is a viable archetype in hyperspace for every faction. I’m not a huge fan of beating a dead horse, but I personally don’t think Republic really can’t put together a viable Ace + Squad list in this format.

Maybe I’m completely wrong, but Obi-Wan and 3 104s was one of the lists I loved running, along with Obi-Wan or Plo with some Golds. Obviously Torrent squads are gone, and while Squad Seven Veterans fit in some lists, a CLT Jedi can’t anchor a list the way a 7B can, and outside of Jedi, Republic “aces” are...Ric? Kinda? I suppose you could run Ric and a bunch of generic N-1s, but that doesn’t scream super viable to me. If you do run CLT Jedi, they prefer having stuff to help line up CLT, which cuts down on the “+ squad” part of the list.

I think Republic is currently the “mash-up” squadron. Some pieces that work and have some really fun interactions, but it really seems to rely on some jank. Or bananas shooting torpedos.

Also, I left aside the fact that Republic’s “real” Ace isn’t in hyperspace, since Anakin was more comfortable in an squadron of Aces than an Ace + squad.

All that being said, next time I play some hyperspace I plan to bring out Wolffe and 3 Squad Sevens, that’s kind of Ace + Squad I guess. Seems fun anyway, especially for folks with an unhealthy love of ARCs like me.

@FatherTurin obi/arcs actually still seems fine in hyperspace. I've played against it and it seems pretty good. i3 ARCs got cheaper and really aren't that bad now, and CLT Obi can still do some work. dropping to CLT on Obi also frees up points for more stuff on the ARCs, such as making one of them Wolffe.

I get that a lot of players very specifically liked 7B Jedi but I'm kinda coming around to CLT

also maybe Y's are worth looking at for the "+squad"? 35 points with ion turret seems good

Totally meh on hyperspace. I only consider it because that's what "everyone else" seems to want to do. Its weird. People seem to like hyperspace because:

1. You have to be more creative. --- I feel the opposite, i think hyperspace limits creativity more than extended does...

2. Its better balanced than extended. --- I don't think it is. It has the illusion of being better balanced because everything is "thrown in the air" and peoples have to "redefine the meta." In reality I think the cross-faction balance is probably worse. And if, for experiments sake, they just froze the hyperspace format, a series of top tier lists would emerge, except now players would have less options than before to deal with those lists.

Well, other than, you know, in-game decision-making? I love hyperspace as a competitive format. It's probably the one thing making me want to play my first store champs tournament (still waiting on a date).

But I also love extended. Seriously doubt FFG would abolish extended as a competitive format, but if they did I would be terribly disappointed.

They are different kinds of creative.

To wit: Build a House.

Hyperspace:

Extended:

But if you insist it has to be Mid Century Modern, hyperspace isn't going to make you happy.

IMHO, the exact reason Hyperspace exists.

The best way to keep the milk from burning is constant stirring.
