Player wants to be a Hutt

By Zeiaxar, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm running an Edge of the Empire campaign, and without going into a ton of depth about my campaign, I have some concerns about what I've written up, and what one of my players wants to be. He wants to be a Hutt Smuggler. Which would be fine, except for a few issues. Given my understanding of Hutts, they're much too big to fit onto a YT-1300 ship, which is what I planned on granting the party for the campaign. Combine that with a lot of the places I have them going being cramped, even by human standards, I just don't particularly see that going well. And while I could change bits and pieces here and there, I can't change too much of it because of the nature of the campaign, having these things in it is kind of a necessity. Any advice? Do I just tell them to pick something else, or is my understanding of Hutts off?

Hutts, from a mechanical standpoint, are not that different from most other species, so I wouldn't over concern myself with that detail. You see in the special editions how big Jabba is next to the Falcon. He's a tight fit for the boarding ramp but that is about it.

From what you described, narratively speaking would be where it is most tricky. I would discuss why in particular they want to be a Hutt? Is it the lore? The stats? Etc. Perhaps tell this player what you have planned in a vague sense so they have a better idea of what setting their character will be in.

I’m not sure using the freighter you have in mind would necessarily preclude having a Hutt PC.

If Hutt movement is somewhat slug-like, then a bit of contorting, muscular contractions and elongation, might squeeze through the passages you envision. Hutt’s are already “Ponderous,” but you could consider making such tight quarters Difficult Terrain (doubling movement maneuver cost). There is also a table in Endless Vigil for spending Advantage, Threat, Triumph, and Despair, in confined spaces.

I mean the YT-1300 is the same model as the Falcon, and having viewed various tours of the one at Galaxy's Edge, and the version for the Solo movie, there's basically nowhere a Hutt could fit outside the cargo area.

I’ll second that there’s a discussion needed with this player to see why they want to play a Hutt. If there’s a deep enough character concept there, I’d allow it. If it’s being done because it’s just a “cool character” idea, or worse: for the lulz, I’d say nay.

As far as getting around the size issues I’d suggest the player just make the Hutt younger, which is also something that could add in more narrative. Kind of a “before they made it as a crime lord typical of their species” deal.

Always fun(ny, at least) when the Hutt gets jammed in a hallway with hte rest of the party behind him and the goons in front. Accidental meat-shield.

I don't see this issue as being all too different from playing something like a Dowutin. Aside from Setback or Difficult Terrain here-and-there, it would mostly just be narrative and the character complaining about how cramped everything is.

I've had a campaign with a hutt PC. he played a hutt agitator and constantly tried to incite rebellions left and right, there was basically nothing the GM could do to make him fail a coercion check (4x intimidating and another 2 plausible deniability) except make the consequence of the success bad for some cases (well, you managed to intimidate the imperial officer, which in return now sees you as a threat and attacks). it was really hilarious seeing him fail at anything else basically since he was a 1 trick pony. one time he bragged about his hutt clan in front of the hand of the empire, which gave him massive obligation and made everybody else facepalm^^

mechanically it was manageable to have a hutt PC, try to seperate your group if you feel like this PC couldnt participate at something like climbing. but you should probably talk to him about things that he will be more or less excluded from (anything remotely acrobatic, I suppose). another issue we had with this player in terms of roleplay was, that he constantly tried to use the rest of the group for his purpose and saw them as beneath himself, which wasnt very helpful imo, so I suggest you really try to integrate (and make himself integrate) this character into the group.

Or you could give them a repulsor chair. :D

Maybe the "Jet Pants" from Fully Operational! Tail movement instead of leg movement.

You do realize Jabba is very old and rich and powerful enough to be pretty fat. Look at Zero the Hutt from the Clone Wars cartoon he is a more accurate size for a PC Hutt

Zero

Haha Haha. (No? Ok.)

PC Hutts are young enough for them to not be particularly large. If your player wants to play one then just let him have his fun.

What Dante said. Plus, imagine all of the story complications you can throw in. "So and so of your khadjiic wants you to do this". Or being targeted because they are a relatively low member of a khadjiic, and a rival Hutt wants to send a message. Etc

Man, I was really hoping one of my players was going to follow through with his Hutt pc.

Hutt preformer.

make your dreams happen.

I could see a Hutt stand-upcomedian happening. In fact that sounds hilarious.

... force the player to make a young hutt? or a runt-hutt?

basically - if size is going to be a persistent problem off the ship, limit the character so that it's not quite so large (also remember that hutts do have a full spine and are a little more like a chubsnake tsuchinoko than they are a slug, so they can slither/slime through tight areas if needed)

I secretly harbor a desire to play a Hutt kung fu master someday. If Sammo Hung can be a big dude kicking ***, why cant PaiMai The Hutt?

Hutts are all different sizes, depending on their age. The game assumes that Hutt PCs are on the young side.

Or you can give them a different ship. For my current game, I gave my players a choice of 10 different ships that were within a reasonable price and performance range.

There is a Disney area comic showing Han Solo smuggling a Hutt crimelord so yes the Falcon is big enought for an adult Hutt.

Jabba on the Millennium Falcon:

I reckon having a hutt character could be reslly interesting. If they have criminal ties that could be pretty handy for things like obligation as well with familt members coming after them or giving them jobs. If I remeber the stats from 'Lords of Nal Hutta', I don't think their size was brought up as an issue, they only drawback was they can't take a second maneuver ever.

Well, I have a player about to play a Mouse droid so. . .

I don't really see the issue here.
If the PC doesn't seem to fit, it needs to find another way, or stay behind and guard the ship.

R2 was assigned guard duty on numerous missions (he really wasn't that nimble) and face it: the core handbook would allow an astromech droid as a character.
