Water shortage crisis & hand card loss

By rashktah, in Battlestar Galactica

Hi!

I have a small question on how to handle hand card loss from certain crisis cards.

For example, our players have to endure a water shortage (Wasserknappheit in german) crisis and the President decides that he and the active player both lose hand cards (2 cards for the President, 3 cards for the active player).

What happens if one of the card-losing players DOES NOT have that many cards at their hand? For example: the President loses his 2 cards without a problem, but the active player only has one card left at his hand, but would have to lose 3 cards as ruled by the crisis and the Presidents decision.

Do the players lose all the cards they will be able to lose or will this crisis-resolving action not be possible to be taken by the President in the first place (because one or both players were not able to follow the rulings of the card) at all???

Thanks for any helpful advice you can give me, so say we all! :)

You can always pick either option unless the Crisis card explicitly says you can't, even if you can't actually carry out the option. If the President or active player doesn't have enough cards in their hand, they discard their entire hand, and the humans get a break for once. If it says "damage two vipers" and you don't have two vipers left to damage, you get a break because things couldn't get any worse on the Hangar Deck!

Nice, thank you very much. Is there any special rule about this anywhere in the rulebook or a FAQ? Or is this ruling just common sense?

Page 30 of the (English, most recent printing) rulebook, which can be found on the BSG support page on this site:

"When a player makes a choice on a Crisis Card, he can always choose the top or bottom section of the card, regardless of whether he will be able to fulfill the game text listed (unless the card specifically restricts this)."

Wow, I don't know how this rule could have slipped through my readings of the rulebook. Thank you very much!!!
