Mask of the Pirate Queen - Delivery Job

By ddbrown30, in Game Masters

I'm currently running Mask and I'm looking for some advice on the delivery job for Ilo. The challenge of the job seems to be the journey through the scrapyards, but this could be easily bypassed with an airspeeder. The book tries to hand wave this away by saying that airspeeders are uncommon here, but my players own their own, so that's not an issue.

Any suggestions on either how to force them to travel by land or how to make the air travel a challenge?

As an aside, why would anyone ever take the fight fixing task? The delivery is clearly, clearly the simpler, easier, and less questionable of the two tasks.

Ambush them, have them encounter some extreme weather so they can either brace it, or go into a nearby canyon where the navigation is difficult, or they wait it out and attacked by wildlife, natives etc.

They can still get lost, end up in the wrong place, etc. Any of those encounters can still happen if they think they're in the right place, but aren't. They land, look around, get ambushed...

If it's still too easy, instead of having the settlement on the surface, put the location underground. Then they have to work their way to the target, maybe through a maze of tunnels through the junk. It doesn't have to be a dungeon crawl, it could be pretty open with lots of "streets", but maybe too tight for speeders. And now their speeders are left outside...

I can't remember how much of this I took/inferred from the book, and how much I added myself, but when I ran this the part the challenge for the PC's was navigating their way their way there. The scenery moved and changed so much as people sifted through the scrap, and more was added, so that a route that was accessible last month might not be so now. They had a starting location and a destination but no certain route through it all. There was always a possibility that this might be made worse by repulsorlifts, so they could use a landspeeder, but had to be careful about their speed.

With an airspeeder that might not be a problem, of course. So how about taking inspiration from the pod race (or the recent Blade Runner film), and have the PC's warned that some scavengers in the scraplands are likely to shoot at air traffic in order to get first pick at what's left of it should it crash. If they ignore that warning, well that's up to them!

Or maybe the guy who wants the package delivered doesn't want it flown, as that might make it easier for someone to track, so insists they travel by ground vehicle? (He was a secret sponsor/investor of the slave camp in my game, but I can't remember if that was in the book already or not).
