Hyperspace and Extended?

By Rat of Vengence, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I've been off playing other games for a while, but am planning to get back into competitive X-Wing. Can someone give me a quick run-down on what the different formats of event/tournament are, and how that effects the playstyle?

Thanks :)

Extended is X-Wing with all of the ships and upgrades released up to this point.

Hyperspace is limited to certain ships and certain upgrades.

Hyperspace was supposedly more beginner friendly at first, but at this point I think of it more like the X-Wing equivalent of Magic the Gathering's standard format.

Extended is still the most common tournament format around here, but FFG is pushing the hyperspace format for many major events including system opens and the first round of store stuff.

This article has a good summary of all of it: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2019/12/27/2020-roadmap-for-star-wars-x-wing-organized-play/

FangedChicken has covered all the major points, and that FFG article explains what's what in terms of organised play (system opens are hyperspace, store champs until july are hyperspace, store champs after july can be either, everything else is extended). I'll add a few more comments:

  • Hyperspace only features content released for second edition (but not all the content released for second edition), meaning that hyperspace players will never need to buy a conversion kit
  • Hyperspace lists are still strong in the extended format. See the results from the recent Sith Taker Open , where 6 of the top 16 lists (including the winner) where hyperspace legal. The UK system open is coming up soon though so that will have pushed more top players towards hyperspace for this event.
  • The January points change means that lists tend to have more ships in now than before. While 2-ship lists such as Boba Fenn are still powerful, most lists seem to be 4+ ships, with 6-8 ship lists being more common than they have been in the past. This is particularly true in hyperspace, where the pool of legal ships is smaller.
  • It's early days, but so far players seem happy with the balance of the hyperspace format, and no faction is a clear underdog. Scum and FO are putting in a particularly good showing at the moment.

Was this in writing as a new rule? Or just a coincidence of the current hyperspace legality? Because there was a time when conversion kit material was needed for some hyperspace builds (specifically the Resistance and First Order).

It's in the FFG roadmap:

Not a coincidence, this is a clear goal of the hyperspace format for 2020. They also mentioned (on stream I believe) that all newly released ships would enter the hyperspace format (with rare exceptions, which would be brought to our attention ahead of time to prevent pre-order confusion).

Pre-2020, the hyperspace format was vastly different and had no clear goal. It's not really helpful to look at 2019 hyperspace and try to make deductions about the future of 2020 hyperspace.

Thanks guys, great answers and much appreciated :)
