Anyone hear about a confirmed ruling?
As written it seems like there would be no reason to believe it can't work, provided all the conditions are met... even though you're not going to be resolving any special crits.

I'm not sure how that would interact with the " printed rear battery armament" part of the Salvo rule.

First thoughts, it'll work fine. "printed rear battery armament" is just a limiter on the original dice pool, so Sato kicks off right before the roll, lettign you change dice
Yes, you start with the printed dice, then exchange with Sato. As you are not adding dice.
I’ve been looking around for this to be clarified since I first tested out the Starhawk. So in theory I CAN toss two black die from long range using the Salvo token? Also, is my opponent able to use defense tokens when being hit back?
If you are throwing 2 Red Dice to begin with, have a squadron that is within distance 1 of the ship shooting at you, use your salvo token and replace the Red Dice with Black before you Roll...
Yes.
And Yes, it is, for all intents and purposes, other than the listed exceptions (default critical only, no "ADD" dice), an
attack
, which means things like Defense Tokens still Apply.

What about the RitR skill "Ion Technician" or Dual Turbo Laser Turrets? As the final result will be using the same amount of dice, you are adding a dice, and then removing a dice, similar to re-rolling.
The amount of dice is irrelevant.
What is banned by Salvo, is the Act of
ADD
That act is defined in the Rule Book.
Just as the act of REROLL is defined in the Rulebook.
So *replacing* a Die isn't adding.
Rerolling a Die isn't ADDING.
Adding and Removing a Die isn't Rerolling.
But ADDING and then REMOVING a die does include the act of *adding*, and you cannot ADD during a Salvo attack.
Its
very
specific, more specific than one could consider "common sense", but that's Rules for you
