Upgrade Timing Chart

By The Jabbawookie, in Star Wars: Armada

For anyone who wishes to use it, I've created a flow chart showing the effects of non-passive upgrade cards (cards with effects you choose to resolve or specific points at which they must resolve) over the course of a ship's activation. Omitted: all squadrons except Jonus and Malee, the aforementioned passive cards like XI7s, passive effects of cards (like Romodi ignoring obstruction), cards with a wide range of timing windows like Commander Beck and Gallant Haven, and effects that occur during setup or the status phase, such as Aspiration or Konstantine. Those belong in another chart.

The formatting is a little sloppy right now (thanks, Word) but I figured it would be best to present it for feedback and corrections before making changes or more charts.

If you're interested in seeing more of these, please let me know what works, what could be better and what's downright wrong. Thanks!

Current changes needed (for a WIP v2):

Fix ugly formatting tomorrow at a reasonable hour

Add Ackbar's "add" effect

Add Jerjerrod to the “determine course” step

Add Slicer Tools after executing a maneuver

Add Suppressor and its timing step

Add Impetuous and Advanced Projectors

Add setup, squadron phase and status phase timings

Add optional effects not linked to upgrade cards (ignition token placement, spending defense tokens, etc.)

Expert Shield Tech happens during the spend defense tokens step, right?

What do you mean by “happens”?

Triggers, yes. As in, you elect to use it.

Resolves, no. As in, it has its effect go off later.

Like Brace itself.

This looks absolutely awesome, and will be a huge help! Thank you!

Is there any chance you can you add a set for 'Prior to Ship Phase', or 'At Beginning of Ship Phase', that would include things like Tarkin, Thrawn, Raddus, Konstantine, Tagge (3rd & 5th), Pryce, Hondo, Raddus, Garm (1st & 5th), Bail Organa, Sabine, Han Solo Squadron?

- I think I've got those all correct? I know these are the things I am most likely to forget to declare & use correctly...

Also, should Jerjerrod be in there (during determine course)?

Is it even worth trying to capture *everything*?

Officer Wedge at the end of the Squadron Phase, Yularen as you execute a command, A lot of the things that occur during or immediately after deployment - Needa, Titus, Officer Ozzel, Cdr Agate, Local Fire Control, Aspiration Title....

I think it would be great to try and capture more if you're able to do so without going too far down the rabbit hole...?

I’ve been trying hard to think about this one, along with Piett and Vanto. Basically, he can go off for any of the four commands or at the start of the ship phase when you trigger a fleet command. Should I just throw him in all of those places, maybe?

And thanks for Jerry, knew I was forgetting someone there.

Love this. Great work.

I've been wanting to make one of these FOREVER for my own use and You've beat me to the punch.
Let me know when you think its "complete" and I would like to ask your permission to add it to the KARM (its own page with full credit given to you)

It would be an honor. Will do!

Does Commander Leia fall into this category as well? Maybe Commander Beck?

You've already got Isard, Aresk, Ezra, and Officer Leia already in there - same place maybe? A sub-note? Could there be a line-item before that to capture the Support Officer?

Looking through again - should Slicer Tools be dropped into 'after you execute a maneuver'? Do you want Hardened Bulkheads, Garel's Honor or Eclipse titles in 'when enemy ship overlaps'? Jaina's Light in 'overlapping obstacles'?

Commander Leia, definitely. Beck occurs “during your activation” (which had to be true because she’s relevant for every potential command timing.)

Ezra and the others have a specific trigger point (when you reveal a command dial,) so the misfits don’t belong there. Same with Support Officer (start of the command phase.)

Slicers is an oversight and will definitely be fixed; another for the list (and Suppressor, and Advanced Projectors, and Impetuous.)

Garel’s Honor, Jaina’s Light and Hardened Bulkheads are all passive effects; they’re always on and happening. If they aren’t, the game is being played wrong. And since they have no timing window and the order in which they occur can’t be controlled, I’m reluctant to include them anywhere for fear of the circumstances in which they trigger expanding with new content (much like Leia and co.) I suppose I could list points where they definitely do trigger, though; would that risk being confusing?

You've also got a box for 'Before you reveal a command'; would any of these work there? Is there another catch-all timing that's worth adding to capture them?

That makes sense. I don't think it would be confusing to specifically call out those more specific timing-points for those cards, but that's just me...

I don't even think it would be confusing to list a card in multiple places - the user of this sheet is likely to need to check the card to learn the specifics of *what* the card does at a given point either way...

I had a few more questions - I assume I'm off base with at least a few, so take what you wish from these:

Does Capt. Rex fit into 'When you resolve a Squadron Command'?

Could Impetuous be dropped into 'Before a friendly ship's Attack Phase' along with Ackbar?

Does Intensify Firepower fit into 'While attacking' (along with the dozens of other cards there)?

Do Mon Karren, Heavy Turbolaser Turrets, and XI-7 Turbolasers fit into 'During Spend Defense Tokens step'?

Along those lines - would it make sense to separate or call out all the cards that occur during opponent activations/attacks from those that you need to remember while you are attacking?

Officer Palpatine, Cracken, Mon Mothma, Rieekan (sorta), Reeva, Gherant, Lira Wessex, QLTs, Cluster Bombs all happen during an opponent's activation, right - so if there's a color code or something to show that, I think it would be a bonus?

Would SW-7's be more correct in 'While attacking' or 'When suffering damage'? Or another reason to not capture them?

Would Dodonna and Medical Team be correct to place in 'When suffering damage'?

Does Rakehell fit into 'During Determine Course step'?

Should Eclipse be in 'When an Enemy ship overlaps you' along with Amity?

Yes;

yes;

yes;

all passives, but as above maybe;

very cool idea;

SW-7s are relevant during the resolve damage step; if I were to list a specific timing window, “when suffering damage” would be the one;

that timing window would be among the windows Dodonna, Medical Team and Lira could trigger, yes;

yes;

passive.

This is rad! I think it’d be a nice way to learn what not to forget when starting to test a new fleet or one you haven’t played. I feel like I forget timing windows when playing new stuff.

Is there any interest from folks in taking this data and producing a chart that highlights just what you’ve got in your particular list? Say, you could paste in a link to your list on Armada Warlords and get a version of this flowchart with just your cards highlighted. @The Jabbawookie how does that sound to you?

That sounds like a fantastic tool; anyone with the time to make it a reality has my full support!

Sweet. I’ll see if I can whip something up after the Portland Prime this weekend!

I was already thinking along these line yesterday.....

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-IQD6GJIuxthRH-dY7aVzqInClKj64rTN0rlGP1JRqg/edit?usp=sharing

I reckon this still requires some troubleshooting - I moved a couple things, and added in a bunch, both cards (and boxes pertaining to fleet build, the start of a game, the start of a round, etc.), and additional text pulled from the Wiki which describe the Phases of a Game Round, etc. I also separated Your Activation from an Opponent's Activation....

If I've done this correctly, this should let you Copy & Paste the text output from either Warlords or Ryan Kingstons Fleet Builder into the 'Paste' sheet of the Doc, and it will populate your cards in that fleet into the proper places in the 'List'...

I'd love to add in the rest of the Objectives in their proper places - whether they move things at the beginning of the game, or are tallied at the end, etc...

There are definitely several cards which appear in multiple places - I tried to capture which effect occurs when (i.e. Raddus & Profundity set aside before deploying fleets, and then can trigger at the beginning of a Round)...

Looking for feedback to correct mistakes or add clarity to specifics cards/effects... The spreadsheet is 'Comment Only', but I think that still lets anyone make a personal copy to play with? Tell me if it's not working...

Thank you for this effort, I think it will come in handy!
