Fireball has to pay a missile tax :(

By Jaysnipesinc, in X-Wing

Anyone else find it annoying that they gave the fireball a missile slot instead of torpedo but every missile requires a target lock, which the fireball doesn't have. :( are missiles really that strong on this frame that it's worth paying a 3pt tax or is it just a wasted slot really?

Edit: yeah, barrage rockets dont require target lock but they cant be equipped on the fireball so doesnt matter.

prockets!

also jesus, the generic firesprays are priced like a front arc jouster (torrents) rather than a SLAMing speed racer, do you really want to raise questions about that gift horse?

In extended, Yeager with Prockets might be interesting? Maybe?

haha prockets do work, I should probably scroll down on yasb. Well that's our only option then without paying a tax. Not the worst but I was hoping for something to give Yeager a higher quality attack for a few rounds, not just once. Similar to the strategy of running concussions on inquisitors. The fireball does make for a pretty good procket delivery system though.

3 points for targeting computer isn’t all that bad.

1. 3 point targeting computer is no big deal

2. prockets want a word

The whole chassis is cheap enough that you can build it out with Prockets or any other missile + Targeting Computer and it will still cost less than (or very close to) a naked jouster with a stronger attack. Remember - the Fireball WANTS to have some damage, since it gets more powerful, in many cases, when it does. Yeager basically gets a stress-free dial if he's damaged (or at least, a dial that has red moves with no consequences).

As an aside, the Fireball's not really ideal for missile delivery. It's better kitted out as a high-speed jouster that can get close quickly and harry your opponents so they have to deal with it while your real firepower comes up from behind and kicks keester, IMO.

Well, Proton Rockets aren't in Hyperspace. In HS, the Fireball can't use any missiles without Targeting Computer (since Targeting Synchronizer is also not around).

But I don't have a problem with that. The base design of the ship is fairly priced (+1 over the Torrent for great mobility on the same statline), so it isn't like they're paying points for the missile slot.

every torp also requires a lock

Targeting Synchronizer also works

You need something with a Tech slot that can move as fast as the Fireball to do that, I think.

I think you main problem is that you're trying to put any ordinance on them. Why bother? The I1 and I2 you would never get lock anyway, and Kaz at I4 is only somewhat likely, but he's gonna be good even without a missile. Jarek could utilize one, but again, why? I'm surprised the ship even has a missile slot.

Also, I don't understand why a torpedo slot would be any better. Every torp requires a lock, while at least some of the missiles don't. Torp would be decisively worse.

Temmin Wexley would like a word!

Or any T70 with Black One.

Tallie with TSynch will fit with 5 Fireballs with Homing Missiles (maybe a few with Concussion). However, it'll almost surely be a terrible list. Tallie gets popped, and you've invested a ship's worth of points into missiles you can't use anymore.

I think it's fantastic design space, I mean, they're given a damage card at the start. These things are like riding an overheated engine on a timer. Cheap fun and some relative possibilities of maybe just doing something on the mat is built in, not a meta monster, and thankfully not OP out of the gate. Relax. My kind of x-wing...

Plus, you've got to remember, "he's too old for this!"

you can fit 6 base fireballs all with prockets. :D

What's a prockets, Mr. Hyperspace?

besides, the best thing to do is 3 forward, 3 bank/forward adv slam into a focus. ditch the weapons disabled. pull a fuel leak or a direct hit... then dare them to shoot you as you are ever closer to exploding and triggers your dead mans switch.

hyper legal too! you can fit 7 with just deadmans switch.

Deadman's switch is love.

Well even if I was wrong I enjoyed the discussion it started. Thanks all.

Also this sounds.... fun actually. I wanna run it against a Sear swarm all the sudden....

I wouldn't say you were wrong - you did ask if anyone else found it annoying that the Fireball has a Missile slot but little use for missiles. The responses you got suggest that no one else thinks it's 'annoying', but they also don't think it was entirely necessary. On the other side, @Wiredin gave you a good use in Extended. Perhaps the question is "Is the missile slot really necessary on a Hyperspace Fireball?" To that, I'd say no, but the ship's cheap enough that it doesn't bother me anyway.

just need to look at the Fireball like you look at a Z95. it has a missile slot, but your probably never ever going to use it because you don't take a Z95 to load it up on upgrades. Same with the Fireball. For me I'll either be taking a fat Kaz for the memes, or I'll be running deadmans station mechanics.... also for the memes.
