Does the monster special ability Magical Immunity mean for example l can not cast a Spell which gives me +3 to my Combat checks.

From the back of the rulebook:

"Physical/Magical Immunity: A Weapon or Spell that adds a bonus
of the resisted type provides none of its normal bonus.
Example: Using a Tommy Gun (normally a +6 Physical bonus)
against a monster with Physical Immunity gives a +0 bonus."

A quick glance at the rules seems to indicate that all Spells are considered magical bonuses and all Weapons are considered physical. I don't recall if the cards actually have a keyword like "Magic" on them. To answer your question directly, however, you can cast the spell, but the bonus it provides will be reduced to zero. This means it would be pointless to do so in most circumstances, but if you have some other ability or something that rewards you simply for casting spells you could still technically trigger that.

This should not be confused with Physical/Magical Resistance which only halves the bonus from the given type instead of outright ignoring it. Make sure you know which ability the monster actually has, because sometimes half the bonus is all you really need. Also note that, as far as I can see, these two abilities only affect the bonus provided to the combat roll. If your spell has some other effect in addition to the +3 bonus, that effect would still occur normally.

Thanks for the answer Steve-O. Am l right in thinking lf a monster had Magical Resistance l could cast the spell that gives me +3 to Combat checks but it would only give me +2.

I would be inclined to say +1, but that's a gut reaction, I haven't actually checked the rules. I'm of the opinion that one should always rule against the investigators in this game, so the fraction would round down.

l have just seen the answer to my question on the back page of the rules, Physical/Magical Resistance does provide half its normal bonus (rounded up).

That's always an odd one for me too. I do what Steve-O said, assume the worst for the investigators. With the resistance and with losing items iirc the rounding actually works to the player's favor. I keep wanting to house rule it to down but my wife has creative threats that always stop that line of thinking...

I stand corrected.

Not trying to offend you here, but why didnt you check the rules first?

I answered another question on a diffrent thread that you posted, all it took was going into the spare room, picking up the basic rules and checking the section you where curious about and typing out what the rules said.

It made me wonder why you didnt check it yourself before posting?

With so many dynamics at play the game can be confusing (I would recomend using the flowcharts mentioned in other posts) as well as reading and re reading the rules and checking faqs etc. The collection of people here are pretty amazing at having a gut feel for things and cross referencing several places to find out how things should operate, but it is a bit of a piss take to create several threads about things that are clearly stated in the rules.

Again that being said, DO ask and dont feel shy about it if you can not locate something on your own, no one here will mind, just make an effort of your own first.

I favor the mantra:

"First it checks the rules, then it reads the FAQ. If no answer, then it posts a question, else it gets the hose again." partido_risa.gif

;'D I have no idea where that quote is from Dam.

::Slowly backs away towards a gun::

"Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb: It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again. "

from Silence of the Lambs, though I prefer Eric Cartman's version partido_risa.gif

;') I knew the source, that's why I was feigning ignorance (while reaching for my gun). I have it now. SO BACK OFF!

Yeah duh Avi. Everyone's seen South Park.
