We coulda had a story!
Also I'm pretty meh on the Duel of the Fates itself. There's too many elements in it that don't seem star wars spirit and or are wayyyy too dark for my taste.
I just wanted a better story.
We’ll never know whether Duel of Fates would have been good or not. That’s neither here nor there. But what I am impressed by is the “Inside baseball” Star Wars knowledge on display. Kuat? The Eclipse? Mustafar? Trevorrow is clearly a fan.
As for me, well, I loved Ep IX, so I have no complaints.

These are absolutely gorgeous.
I'd miss the redemption arc for Ben Solo (Hux and Rose are missing...) but this is a much better story than the fanservice left-turn we ultimately got.
Edited by NorsehoundId miss the redemption arc too. its too weird to be seeing no redemption. That to me seems against the ethos of a star wars story.

What is this anyway? A fan project?

It is Colin Trevorrow's original script for Episode IX. It has been confirmed to be real.
Having a single eclipse class is significantly less stupid than the Xyston class fleet. Still stupid, but absolutely a move in the right direction.
There seems to be the core of something decent, but the details I’m seeing still leave me underwhelmed.

To add to this, the concept art that has leaked comes from two separate drafts with some fairly different story beats, so there is no one “Duel of the Fates,” and if Trevorrow had been kept on, the final version likely would have looked different still.
My favorite concept from his drafts is definitely First Order-occupied Coruscant. That sounds like it could have been awesome on the big screen.
