R1-J5 ("Bucket") Pilot & Exposing Damage Cards

By Orpheus_16, in X-Wing Rules Questions

R1-J5 ("Bucket"): Before you expose 1 of your damage cards, you may look at your facedown damage cards, choose 1, and expose that card instead.

Question 1: Does Bucket's ability also apply to effects that instruct you to "expose a damage card" (no other qualifiers to expose) such as with Concussion Missiles, Rexler Brath's, & Zertik Strom?

Normally, exposing is called out in the RR as being random. However, R1-J5 seems to override this normal randomness.

Question 2: What about Thane Kyrell's ability where you get to choose which one to expose? Does Bucket get to override Thane's choice?

Rules Reference Excerpt on Exposing Damage Cards:

Some abilities can cause damage cards to be flipped. A facedown damage card can be exposed, which flips it faceup and the effect is resolved. Both facedown and faceup damage cards can be repaired. If a faceup damage card is repaired, it is flipped facedown. If a facedown damage card is repaired, it is discarded.

  • Exposing a damage card does not count as dealing a damage card and therefore does not trigger abilities related to suffering damage.
  • If an ability exposes or repairs a ship’s facedown damage card, and the ship has multiple facedown damage cards, the card is chosen randomly from the facedown damage cards the ship has.
    • To randomly select a facedown damage card, one player shuffles those cards and the other player chooses one.

Concussion Missiles: After this attack hits, each ship at range 0-1 of the defender exposes 1 of its damage cards.

Rexler Brath: After you perform an attack that hits, if you are evading, expose 1 of the defender's damage cards.

Zertik Strom: During the End Phase, you may spend a lock you have on an enemy ship to expose 1 of that ship's damage cards.

Thane Kyrell: While you perform an attack, you may spend [focus], [hit], or [crit] result to look at the defender's facedown damage cards, choose 1 and expose it.

Note: Submitted elsewhere as well if these questions looks familiar. Also, have submitted question to the official FFG Rules question form.

For everyone but Thane, there shouldn't be any doubt that R1 gets to pick which card to expose.

With Thane... I'm less confident, but I'd also say R1 wins and gets to pick a different card. Thane is still instructing you to expose a card, at which point Bucket hijacks the process. I could see it going the other way, but that's my first impression.

Hmm... interesting question. I'm not quite sure, myself...

As I look at the cards, I'd be inclined to agree with @theBitterFig . Thane gets to look at all of R1-J5's facedown damage cards, and choose one of them. But as soon as he tries to expose it, Bucket's ability takes over, letting Bucket choose instead.

Looks like some need to reread the Golden Rules again. Page 2 of the Rules Reference.

How the heck did this end up in this thread, I could have sworn I'd posted it in the E-Wing locks thread...

Thane is exposing the card not r1j5 so I would say Thane wins out on this one.

It seems clear for me.

R1-J5 says "when YOU expose 1 of your damage cards..."

From RR

Use of “You”
Many pilot and ship abilities use the word “you” to refer to the ship card’s
corresponding ship. Upgrade, damage, and condition cards that use the word
“you” refer to the ship to which the card has been dealt or equipped.
Card effects that use “you” always refer to the ship or remote, not the player.

Checking The other pilots they are The ones exposing a damage card on The fireball, not r1j5:

Thane is The one exposing a card . ✖

Rexler and Zertik also are The ones exposing one of The cards ✖

Concussion , each ship exposes , ✔

Just RAW, it doesnt say "when one of your cards is exposed", but "when you expose"

The case is clear as Txousman states and I am in full agreement Thane, Rex and Strom are the ones exposing the cards not R1-J5 so his ability does not even proc. Thane, Rex and Strom’s abilities win out on these instances.

Also , if some day, they get a crew slot, a novice technician can repair crits and in case you get a 💥 hit and have to expose, it would be able to pick

On second look, I find this convincing.
