Fan made swag, am I being rude by saying no thanks?

By RedHotDice, in X-Wing

as someone who makes a lot of fan made stuff yeah there's always people who don't want it, that's why I ask do you want it, no hard feelings.

the way this is put is kinda rude though, idk... I've personally seen a lot of fan made stuff that's better quality than the official stuff, it's just not something you can brag about as much.

anyway, if I meet you at a tournament I'd much rather you say no than take the stuff I spend a good amount of my own money on to try to make people happy, be secretly seething mad about it, and then throw it out later.

I either decline, or take it and just give it to my next opponent. I have no interest at all in fan-made alt arts or tokens.

Man, this is the absolute opposite of the Destiny community. Who are up in arms that a TO said they can't use their Reylo alt arts or something.

Imagine a game where the only fun is alt arts

I think I know that game... I had an alt-art of two ships sitting on the board while another game was being played instead.

Taking it just to throw it out first chance you get seems a little rude itself. It's more polite to just respectfully say, " No, thank you. Your homemade item makes me feel like vomiting, and you should feel ashamed for having spent so much time on it. Now, I do hope you don't mind, but I will take your hideously painted ship and stomp on it repeatedly until it's nothing more than a pile of dust. Ok?"

Also, while you may not want them, some people like to keep stuff like team tokens as a memento of all the different teams they've played or the events they've gone to (or a trophy of all the teams they've beaten).

Yep. I"ve got some custom tokens, templates, and my carrying case is covered with swag stickers.

If someone just said "No thanks" if I offered them a sticker, I'd understand. If you don't collect that stuff, no problem.

I love the swag personally. and the laser engraved wood tokens, I love those too! I make alt arts and give them out all the time, even put them up as a prize support. Sent a bunch to GSP to be given way on stream.

You don't be a rude negative piece of garbage about it. The original post is not a good indication of the community at large and has no place. If you don't want it, politely decline. I've had people decline my alt ats, but one person just slid them back to me when I handed them to me without even looking at me. that was rude and uncalled for. a polite "no thanks" would have sufficed.

I think of homemade swag as little trophies or mementos of games and tournaments I have played at.

Sometimes you can get some cool stuff, other times you get some things that you don't really like. I got this one alt art and me and some others decided to hand it off to a friend and we shared a laugh about it.

If you really don't want it then just say no thanks.

Just take the swag. Dont be rude.

After you collect enuff, put them in baggies as blind bag gifts and hand em out during your next LGS tourney. Many people will enjoy a baggie of like 5 alt arts, and 5 acryllic tokens, and will think of you as a cool caring Xwinger and not a rude whiny... 🤐

Or just say no thanks. I hand out stickers and alt arts all the time, or 3d printed bomb laying 1 straight templates. It doesnt hurt my feelings if they say no thanks.

Dear OP, who hurt you?

So to the OP, your response to someone offering you a small gift is to lie, accept it, then passive agressively call them out and insult them on the forums?

that is the worst brat behaviour Ive heard in awhile.

Small gifts are a token of respect and goodwill, something someone put effort into to improve the overall experience. they arent supposed to change your life. its like a goodie bag or lollipops at a front desk. If you dont want them just say thanks and decline

If you do it like this then yeah, it's super rude and you're a jerk.

yeah the more I see this post on the front page the more I have to say, this is among the worst forum posts I've ever seen

Whatever on being wrong about the game or fighting over rules and organized play or whatever, this is just mean-spirited

I would hate it if a new player looked on the forums and read this garbage, it's a terrible reflection on our community as a whole

I think.homemade alts are amazing. Even if I dont like it..man. the amount of time and energy put into it makes me wanna use it and show others. Some friends may want it themselves

absolutely. I should have other things to be bothered by in this world, but the OP is a royal ****** for this. sorry. not sorry.

Growing up I played on a travel soccer team. When we played at tournaments, teams would exchange patches or pins of your team with the opposing players during the handshake line. This is a tradition in other sports as well. You got to build a collection and it was a fun reminder.

I’ve only been to one major event, but I thought it was so cool that others were offering these things. I got tokens, cards, and stickers and I had nothing of my own to exchange.

Obviously, you can decline these things, but maybe you play at a store or something where you could just put them out for people to take who can’t make it to events?

Anyway, for me personally, I’d love to see people get even more creative with this type of thing.

Only thing worse than fan-made swag is fan-made rage at friendly opponents giving away free stuff they designed and paid for.

I genuinely can't tell if this is genuine

Alright folks, I think OP's question has been answered. Unless OP has any follow-up questions, we should move on and leave this thread so that it doesn't keep jumping up to the top of the page.

Send the alt arts and such to me! I collect them! I’m the opposite, I will look around at the UK X-Wing system open (it’s the only large event I go to) just looking for some great fan made content. I am very proud of the collection I’ve accrued.

I do feel awkward asking about them though, particularly if I am not an opponent and someone who has just noticed the custom stuff while walking around.

That being said...the way you phrased your view of the custom stuff is abhorrent. It’s okay to not like them and politely refuse. To belittle people who make that stuff on here. That is deplorable. You could have just asked ā€œnot a fan of custom stuff, what’s the best way to decline without being rude?ā€

See? No insults towards any particular fan made item or belittling of someone’s time on it.

Part of the reasons I enjoy X-Wing's Organised Play so much is it gives me the chance to meet new players, see new lists in action and above all have a laugh and a good time.

Rather than just playing friends or people in my local area, I've played people from the forum, all over the country, around the world.

And over the years, I've been given a bunfle of homemade X-Wing swag. Some of it's practical, some of it's funny, some of it's utterly bizarre... but it"s all appreciated. It all reminds me of the cool people I've met, the fun games I've had and the events I've attended.

I really need to come up with my own swag for the next event. Whole the official FFG swag is great for the game, the fan made stuff is all about the fantastic community.

Not to irritate @gadwag or anything (sorry, scroll down a bit sir), but I have my 2 cents:

1) Here's my advice: As far as fan-made stuff, think what you like, but always be kind to those who play the game and especially to those who go above and create or like to give out "fan made" items (this term to include all those items for the game made by players or outside the FFG/Asmodee machine). I think this is the thread's (possible) overall consensus.

Here's my wisdom: As you get older, you will recognize the importance of things that are personal. Factory made, well done, machined stuff is nice and fits the bill when your young or even as you get older too. However, items made by people that are more creative but obviously less refined and industrial will become far more important to you as your history begins to weigh as heavily as your possibilities. A crayon scribbled note will one day be far more cherished than the most interactive and ornate Hallmark Card. Also too, my slightly blurry Inquisitor Portrait Pilot card from 1.0 is ALWAYS used over my Factory card.

In other words @RedHotDice, I feel the opposite in regards to your post, but it's fine and actually good to be different, for I don't have hot dice, so we re on opposite sides of the spectrum there as well.

...now where's my tea?

You do realize that commenting on the thread to ask others to not "bump" the thread, actually "bumps" the thread 'eh?

I laughed, but then wondered if you were being coy and funny (I'm hoping), or if you were akin to the old guy in the neighborhood yelling for us to "stay off your lawn"?

...grab a tea mate, you'll feel better and enjoy the day.

Cheers!

Ah, yes... "logic".
