Advice on Fog of War for GenCon event

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Epic Play

Hi All,

I am going to run a Fog of War (the Epic Battles scenario) event for up to 6 players on Thursday afternoon at GenCon 2020. The scenario has each player getting 400 pts to bash each other's brains out. I would like to present what I am going to run and would like some feedback on the lists.

I will be presenting all the ships for everyone. I am limited in what Factions I have and which ships I have. So, please bear with me on this. I only have 1 of each Huge ship.

  1. Empire 1
  2. Rebels
  3. Scum
  4. Separatists
  5. First Order
  6. Empire 2

I don't own any Republic or Resistance, so.....they don't get to play. I also only have one C-ROC and can't add one in for both Scum and Separatists. The faction I have the most is Empire and they get two options.

Part of why I picked what I picked was for simplicity's sake. I could probably have a more optimal load out on some of these, but I don't want to make the game complicated. If I am making these and it could be the first time anyone looks at these lists as they play, I don't want to make it too complicated. So, not so many complicated tricks. I'm trying to be rather straight forward.

The idea is to have a FUN game that isn't too complicated. Let me know what you guys think from that perspective.

These are the lists:

Thoughts?

@heychadwick - y'know... I’m going to be right there running an event on Thursday. I can bring a C-ROC if you wanted one for the event.

Hmm....maybe I should take you up on that offer. You think I should adjust the Scum list to have a C-ROC? Or should I leave as is? It is kind of interesting.

It is indeed. I offer only because you sounded a little regretful of not having another.

I’m really curious how you manage the fog of war aspect. Or is that just the event title? Is this an epic thing? (Still haven’t got my box)

You don't have your box yet? Why not? Surely not due to it not being there. I'll email you details.

It is a Scenario from Epic Battles. 6 way 400 pts slug fest, but you only get points for killing enemy ships. So, as long as you are killing, you are doing well. First to x points wins.

Totally because it didn’t get here. Some of the smaller stores went straight from preorder to back order. I haven’t seen an epic box since release, when I bought huge ships from another store.

Neat. I’ll re-evaluate your lists tonight after work.

I ran a Fog of War match with 400pt squadrons recently... it got very crowded with 7 players (supposed to have only 6).

Here is the problem with FoG using points: too many ships! Using quick builds (as intended) would limit each player to about 4 - 6 ships total without any huge ships on the table.

We had wings and huge ships, and it was very hard to find legal deployment locations for reserve ships. That meant nearly half my squad was on the bench most of the match.

My advice: limit each player to 6 ships maximum, no huge ships. Maybe even reduce points to 300 per player. If you want huge ships, then maybe require that they start in reserve (the range 3 radius around a huge ship limits locations for reserves to deploy later.

I appreciate the advice. It's always better to talk to people that have done this before.

Yes....I forgot that I should do this as Quick Builds. Hmmm.....that does propose a problem in that there are only 1 Quick Build Wings for each Faction. I could easily switch stuff to QB points, but....I couldn't have all the Wings that I do above. For those Factions that don't have Huge ships, that could be bad. It almost seems worse to not allow Wings of ships because there is no Quick Build of it.

You talk about only having 4-6 ships, but if you count a Wing as a single ship, I have that...or even less. Rebels have 5 ships (including 3 in a Wing). So, I think the lists I have are generally good, with just some Tie Fighters being the exception. I will probably have to test it to perhaps tweak things.

I think I should use the Quick Builds, but I might just make the Wings any way I want. That way I can have some variety. If I check out the costs for the Quick Build Wings, they are all normal points and normal QB (with a couple of tweaks), but add 1 Threat Point for being a Wing. So, with that in mind, I can probably build my own QB Wings by just using the base points and then adding 1 to the Wing Leader.

Hmmmm...I'll have to change it all to QB and see what it is then. THANKS!
