Juke card and how to use it

By t0pr00ster, in X-Wing

I have a juke card that I can put on my ships but I don't know how and when to use it whether it's when I'm attacking or when I'm defending?

You use it while attacking.

So when you're attacking someone, if you have an Evade token, after they roll their green dice, you can use Juke on them. You can turn one of their Evade results into a Focus result. This means they'll need to spend a Focus token, Calculate Token, or Force Charge in order to get their Evade back. If they don't have any more of them, it'll help you to push damage.

Strategically... you probably shouldn't use Juke.

Most ships are bad with Juke. Pretty much only TIE Phantoms are good with it. TIE Defenders can make good use of it, but TIE Defenders with Talent slots are expensive. N-1 Naboo Fighters can easily get Evade actions to power it, but Juke is expensive and N-1 Fighters aren't that tanky, so even there it's not great.

Also to note: Juke works best with higher-initiative ships. If you're attacking last, there's a decent chance you'll want to spend your Evade token on your own green dice to protect yourself, so it's best to attack as early as you can with a ship with Juke.

You use it when a ship you are shooting at rolls green die and you have an evade token. You modify their die first, so if they rolled an evade, you can turn that into a focus.
Then they can modify their dice. If they have a focus, they can turn all focus results into evades.
Juke works great against ships that don’t have focus.

Also, Juke is FAR better in multiples. A single ship with Juke is mostly going to end up making very little difference with it, but four ships with Juke all shoting the same target are each pushing an extra damage through after the first, most likely.

Vermeil, Vader, Juke.

1) You strip their focus with Vader (or damage them if they don't have any greens).

2) You attack them, and you get a free hit because they don't have any greens.

3) You Juke them; it's like an always-on crack shot.

Of course it only works when you're not stressed, but in my experience I often found that evade is Vermeil's favorite action most of the time anyway – offensive Focus is mostly redundant with his ability, and defensive focus is a waste. Jam is mostly redundant with Vader. Evade saves lives vs lower initiative. Vs higher initiative, it's honestly a good idea to save your evade for attack as often as not; the damage you push is worth the one you would save, and you'll have perfect information as to whether that's the case or not. It also leaves the attacked ship vulnerable from other ships' attacks, even from higher initiative since Vader procs at the start of the engagement phase.

This is one of my favorite Empire lists. Bid is kinda small for I5, but you can leave TC/FCS off Whisper if it matters more. It has a lot more flexibility than it looks like and it can really push damage through. Only weakness is vs I6 aces and maybe some forms of beef.

Major Vermeil (49)
Juke (7)
Darth Vader (14)

"Duchess" (42)

Fifth Brother (11)

"Whisper" (57)
