How do you play against a wing of defenders

By BenDay, in X-Wing Epic Play

I find moving up to get shots at R2-3 or so puts you in perfect range to people over next turn.

The thing is, the wings always move first. So if I land in range to shoot the Huge Ship, I usually have ample space to evade.

What you could do is to fly like two GR75, using them as a kind of vacuum cleaner, but it's extremely predictable, and if they're evaded, there go 110 points right towards the board edge for nothing.

😂 made me giggle. More seriously they are kinda ridiculously priced too (therefore fairly priced!)

@BenDay focus on wingmates, try to block, ionise the wing leader to break the wing if you want to get the wing leader.

Agreed, a I1 delta is 67 points. So, if you took a full wing (IE 6 ships), that's over 400 points. For 6 I1's with no upgrades. If you have named pilots and upgrades, this wing is basically your entire list. If I was facing that, I'd ram it with a huge ship. It's be great

As you mention, 6 is way to expensive. I always fly just three (2 delta and ace), three defenders is still 12 shields protected by 3 greens and probably an evade. Ion works some times, but if the wing can it just slows down and the wing mates “snap back in”. I think the sensible option is to avoid them but huge ships can’t do that so, in epic, I find defenders are always a good choice.

That's fair. And it can vary, depending on what you're facing. I don't think defenders are bad. They are a fantastic ship.

But I think Epic has so many efficient things that would cost less. For 200 points, I can fully kit out a raider that regens 2 shields a turn, makes multiple attacks, and does much more consistent damage.

I think some of the large ships just do more for the cost. The biggest upside I see for a defender wing is running Rexler. Crits on a huge ship can be devastating. I do love the idea of him getting to freely flip damage cards over. he doesn't really need a whole bunch of upgrades either.

Just my opinion, but I would bet on three defenders with HLC, one being Rexlar, over any huge ship of equal price.

If I get my Raider and Jendon and can land my Range 4 shots, I'll bet on me.

Range 4 on a defender, in your dreams. Oh the defender would be 5 green dice plus evade plus focus. How many shots you got?

I agree with you that range 4 on a defender will be hard to damage.

But considering the defender doesn't shoot at range 4, the odds of the defender being damaged are better than the Raider being damaged.

It's green dice. Green dice are treacherous. And I have four attacks with four to five dice. And mine will be modded. All of them.

How are you getting 4 attacks out to range 4? Targeting battery, yes, but that's only 3 dice. Proton Torpedoes, yes, but that's one focus token for Ordinance Bombardment specialists. But the missile slot caps out at 3 dice of damage, IIRC, and also needs a calculate token, which means the Corvus title for the ability. And then what? Non CR90 primaries are limited to range 3 (again, barring bombardment specialists, but where is your 3rd calculate coming from?)

You're right, I went overboard there.

Man overboard! :D

Still, Bombardment Specialist makes all attacks possible at R4....if you have enough Calc tokens. I think you would need more than 1 attack to make it worth it....unless I am rolling the green dice!

That's my general idea. The Raider has the unique ability to individually overwhelm the green dice; one bad roll, and you're in troubled waters. Those tokens don't hold forever. When there are only two Defenders left, the Huge Ship is in a much stronger position: I regenerate two shields per round, whereas you will average 4 to six damage, depending on range.

That's why I run both. :3
