Gamorrean Marauder Melee vs. Skill Limit at CharGen

By Fl1nt, in Game Masters

Hello,

So I've run a OneShot and one of my players created a Gamorrean Marauder.
Gamorreans start with 1 Skill in Melee and when choosing Hired Gun and Marauder you can gain 1 Skill Rank in Melee each.

The question is now; since the Skill Limit at CharGen is 2, is it possible to choose 1 Rank in Melee for the Hired Gun and 1 Rank in Melee for the Marauder to gain Melee 3 nonetheless?

My take is, No you can't because the limit is 2 and it doesn't say where the ranks in the skill come from.

The take of my Player was that he was not allowed to buy ranks above 2.

What is your take on this?

Skills for characters are limited to 2 at chargen, period... except I think there is an exception made in the case of Corellians, with piloting.

If starting at knight level, it would indeed be permissible to avail oneself of all three ranks in Melee (with 3 being the new ceiling, using knight level chargen rules).

Actually you don't automatically gain a rank in those career and specialisation skills, you choose 4 from Career and 2 from your first specialisation.

RAW wise you are right, your player is wrong.

Under the species it is stated that you are not allowed to train the skill above 2 in char creation.

In the skills section it is stated that every rank in any skill represents a substantial degree of training and practice.

The conclusion would be that the wording under any species with one rank in any skill means that there is no way (with some very specific exceptions) to raise any skill above rank 2 until you are done with char creation and into the first adventure.

What could work is to save enough xp in creation and keep it into actual play so he can raise a skill while playing.

But the Species-Career-Spec combo doesn't work, no matter how hard he tries to play around with the wording...

In the species listing, it says specifically (for all of them): "They still may not train this skill above rank 2 during character creation."

One-Shot character gen is SLIIIIIGHTLY different than normal, and you can bend the rules under the following circumstance ...

  • So you go through the normal character gen process. They are capped at 2 skill ranks at this point. Make sure you officially end the character gen process once the XP is spent (as much as it can)
  • Then, because you normally want to hit the ground running during a one-shot, you dump some extra credits and XP on the player. At this point they can get those extra ranks

That's exactly what knight level play is :)

Correct: Corellian Humans have a specific exception to the 'no more than 2 ranks at creation' rule

Corellians begin the game with one rank in Piloting (Planetary) or Piloting (Space). Because Corellians are naturally exceptional pilots and grow up handling swoops, airspeeders, and spacecraft from a young age, they may train Piloting up to rank 3 during character creation.

It is important to note that with Heroic/Knight-level play you still cannot skills train above rank 3.

Okay thanks for all the feedback.
Just wanted to make sure that I understood the Rules correctly and my decision was justified.

As for starting the Players with more credits and XP, yes I do this for some OneShots, but the one I ran recently was geared towards Starter Characters.
