L3-37

By Naidel9, in X-Wing Rules Questions

When L3-37 works? During the “attacks dice” step, particularly on the “modify attack dice” step or during defense dice step. That is because on the card says “while you defend” and I’m not sure when it works. Thanks

Modify attack dice step.

You're defending since The moment you've been chosen as The target of The attack step 1.c.

To clarify a bit more there are several steps that you go through during an attack. I will probably forget some but the general idea is:

Attacker declares weapon and target (measures range and all that).

Attacker rolls attack dice

Defender modifies attack dice (L3 triggers here)

Attacker modifies attack dice (cannot reroll if L3 was used)

Defender rolls defense dice

Attacker modifies defense dice

Defender modifies defense dice

Compare and Neutralize results

Deal damage

Hope that helped. There is a flowchart in the rules reference (or there used to be in 1e).

Just curious. Would that mean that attacker cannot take the target lock to reroll if L3-37 is used during the attack?

Since L3 rerolls all attack dice, yes that would make all the dice ineligible for other rerolls from spending a Lock or using an upgrade/pilot ability. (Notable exception for Rebel Han since his ability "does not count as a reroll")

There is not a flow chart for 2e attack steps since they are fully written out on p.4-5 of the current Rules Reference (v1.1.0). The steps are pretty much the same order though, plus the inclusion of numbering and sub-steps for easier reference.

The flow chart of 1e was an unfortunate artifact of the progressive increase in complexity. It was much easier at the time to introduce the flow chart and answer all the timing questions at once instead of answer them all individually. Luckily, they baked the whole thing into the 2e rule book, including 'after attacking/defending' abilities!

RR pg 10 - Dice Modification.

Quote

Although dice can be modified by multiple effects, each die cannot be rerolled more than once.

Once L3-37 forces the attack dice to be re-rolled, they cannot be re-rolled again due to this rule. Since L3 triggers before the attacker can modify the dice, she can prevent any reroll ability's the attacker has including locks, predator, Fire-Control system, ect.. This rule doesnt care *who* rerolled the dice, only if they were, or not.

As nitrobenz pointed out, Rebel Pilot Han (yt-1300) is the only one that ignores this rule because he specifically states he ignores it.
