Looking at that other thread on weapon quality gave me an idea. And another fun way to deprive rich acolytes of their cash.
Weapon Finishes

In addition to any other upgrades the weapon has and it's overall build quality it can have a weapon finish. The weapons finish is a purely cosmetic upgrade that consists of coats of paint, laquering, and replacing some weapon fitings with other parts.
A basic quality finish would change the weapon to be up to 3 non-metalic colours divided by parts or simple patterns. This includes basic wood finishes and simple 1 colour designs such as shapes or letters.
Some examples include:
- A lasgun in Cadian pattern camoflage.
- An autogun with a wooden stock and grip with blue casing.
- A black pomeled knife with red blade.
- A stub revolver with pink body and white grip.
Poor Quality
The weapons finish is poorly executed or otherwise inferior quality. It cannot include wooden sections (unless wood is abundant of that world), designs or patterns but different parts of the weapon can be different colours (albeit badly applied and going over the edges). The paint jobs is already going to be peeling or faded.
Good quality
The finish can include metalic sections (but not precious metals), rare woods, semi precious meterials (jade, ivory, bone, moth of pearl), fairly intricate designs in embosed or enscribed work and even small designs or accents of precious metals.
Examples:
- A hellgun with gloss black body with gold etched letters spelling the owners name.
- A hand cannon with a chrome body and with mother of pearl grip inlaid with an Arbites symbol.
- A longsword with a blue metal blade and with a mahogany hilt.
Best quality
The entire weapon can plated in precious metals, inscriptions and designs are fine art quality and can even include a number of small precious stones can be set into the weapon.
- A gold boltgun enscribed with the a saints visage on the side which has saphire eyes.
- A silver rapier sword with prayers inscribed in gold down it's length.
Cosmetic only?
Well that's up to the GM. In some circumstances (such as a ball in a Noble Spire) an unfinished weapon might stand out, giving bonuses to people looking for interlopers that see it. In other cases (such as the underhive) walking around with a pimped out weapon can make a character more memorable, this may be part of idea of course and a character with Unremarkable and blinging weapon is likely to only be remembered for their gun.
