Average Turns Per Game; 1.0 vs. Second Edition

By Cloaker, in X-Wing

Curious.... for those that keep track.

1) How many turns do you average per 75 minute game of X-wing?

2) Are you playing more or less turns than you did in 1.0?

3) If yes or no to #2, why?

Thanks in advance to any who answer....

I actually asked this question. It was important for my basic skills to teach the game.

Usually around 9-10 turns for an avg game in the previous 2e point-system where many games would go to time. (not be game end by elimination)

Some games now will end by elimination more, esp with 5X firepower. I estimate 8-9 now.

The first engagement happens usually turn 3, can be forced into turn 2 often, and only turn1 if both parties really move (ex both 5 forward and one boosts).

So you get 6 turns or so of combat, maybe 7.

If slow play, you'll end up with like 8 turns and 5 combat turns. For bulk lists this is huge.

Didn't keep track in 1e. Doesn't matter to me anymore.

I haven’t tracked data but I’ve noticed less turns, more likely to go to time and things die faster. This means the length of a turn for me is longer due to all the different tokens and rules to check for abilities as well as more late turns with solitary, limping ships and little happening. My group is more casual and I only did tournaments in 1.0 not 2.0.

The best 2.0 info I'm aware of is this here: https://www.pinksquadron.dk/2019/07/do-we-go-to-time/ (Important to note that one player scoring 200 does not equal a finished game in the emotional sense - and that's what we're all interested in. A game might feel over to both, and rightfully so, when the losing one still has ships. Two lambdas at 1 hull against two from triple aces is not a fight in any way, but would be at least 42 points. Such a 158-X win would not show up as finished game even if we can tell that it should.)

As for your questions: People are generally really bad in guessing their played turns, so I don't trust that. At all. Prior to Dion counting turns, we thought 13 turns were normal and vassal league went up to 19 (!). Dion brought it down to 11 as normal length. 2.0 is likely lower. But of course, the question is not that simple. Why are we counting turns and not e.g. turns of combat (do you count all from the first shot or just those where anyone shot)? Or instead how many dials were set in total? 6turns for 8 TIEs are more physical dials than 12 turns for triple aces. Some make more sense, others less. I am not saying any of those is good. My point is rather: why is "average turns per game" the metric that matters?

You're on track with what I am most intrigued about. Average turns yes, and average combat turns... just wondering how many people are getting in, both casual and competitive. I used to be around 8 to 9 when 2e first began. Average about 11 now.

Pure curiosity.

Haha same here! I would love to have all these numbers, just because.
