New Squad Builder?

They have added the new product to the my collection page so there is the possibility we’ll get an update to the old app before we see a new app.

Of course there’s also the possibility that we get new features to this app as opposed to a whole new one. was it actually stated that a brand new app was coming or was there a lot of gray area when they mentioned new app?

Yes. What is the source for the "New App" announcement?

@Kieransi 's collected Discord thread is the source. See below:

Specifically, the first post includes this...

Hello X-Wing players! Many of you have noticed that the huge ships have not been added to the X-Wing Squad Builder app. We are actually in the process of completely reworking our X-Wing Squad Builder app, including developing a much more user-friendly interface, offline mode, and support for huge ships and epic play. For now, all tournament-legal ships are still supported by the current Squad Builder app. For huge ships and epic play, we recommend that you use the points lists provided on the FFG website for now. We'll have much more information to share about the reworked Squad Builder app as it comes closer to release!

Ah, thanks. It does sound like it'll be a bit of an improvement over what we have now.

I love how they're basically saying "Use Launch Bay Next or YASB."

There's no one alive who wants to build a 500-pt fleet with paper and pencil and no point costs on cards...

I'm unfortunately assuming that this means it's not ready yet, or even close to it. Alex declined to comment at all.

I wonder if it will include any new modes or an AI feature or something crazy out of left field...

Compare the experience of putting that list together and it becomes quite clear...

Sorry, I guess I just don't see looking at a couple lists and adding numbers together as all that harrowing an experience; especially with a pencil and paper handy.

Not saying it's "harrowing," just that by comparison one takes 30 seconds, the other probably upwards of 10 minutes, and that's if you've done it several times and have a good sense of what you're doing.

Granted. But there's a huge difference between, "One way is faster," and, "The faster way is the only realistic option."

Then again, I also find the calculation and cross-checking to be somewhat fun and satisfying itself.

Or assemble all the cardboard for casual night.

The new App better print a usable list* or it will be DOA for me, again.

*This would also be an excellent way to support Epic since most people still find the time required for set-up onerous.

Yeah, to be honest I thought the new way they were doing the cards (no more flipping or discarding, just tokens) meant a lot more versatility to printable lists. On the other hand, cards like Proud Tradition, L3, and S-Foils still do get flipped. How would a printable list deal with that? I guess you have both printed, one above the other, and indicate which is active with a token or something?

I personally like the card collection aspect a bit, except when it means I have to buy 4 Barons to get 4 copies of Proud Tradition...

YASB lists both sides, so I just mark it with a token. Same for S-foils, since I don't have any flappy X-Wings for Resistance.

I hate the cards. Not only for the reason you stated, but also because they are a bunch of cumbersome components to get together to play, and then more clutter on the table.

I like that with printouts [a ship + it's upgrades] becomes a single box of text, not several separate cards.

And since cards alone are now not enough to listbuild, IMHO they have become even more useless as a game component, except as a tournament "proof of purchase."

I quite enjoy the cards, personally; I don't think I would find the game nearly as fun without them. There's just something great about looking through them, assembling them, handling them, and seeing them all laid out in front of you.

When I need that, I play Magic: The Gathering. 🥴

Just noticed that the official squad builder was updated with the new points and Hyperspace-legal stuff today. Guess we have to wait a bit longer for the new app. :S

Thanks for the heads up. Nice of them to advance the revision number and supply patch notes.
