Clone Trooper Painting Help

By Fort Defender, in Painting

I just ordered a clone wars core set and realized that I have no idea how I am going to paint the clone troopers. When we pre-ordered the original core set, my friend wanted all this stormtroopers painted green & brown. I am now (after two years of painting) up to the challenge to paint the clone troopers white. I don’t have an air brush or the means to get an expensive one but I am willing to go out and buy paint/brushes/wash. Any help would much appreciated!
Thanks, Fort Defender

Hi,

Just go on youtube and look at how "Soratro's Painting" and "Zorpazorp" do it, and you'll do fine ;) !

Just really think about your color scheme in the long run. Because there will be a lot of Clone variants, and you'll want to differenciate them quite efficiently.

For now there is just Phase 1 and Phase 2... but there will be ARC troopers, commandos, and maybe others. Sure the minis will be and look different, but not too much from afar.

I for example settled to paint all my Phase I clones in classic black and white scheme, without differentiating the leaders (they have googles anyway !) . My Phase II clones will just have a little bit of color in there (blue here). I will then paint my ARC in the classic blue and white scheme. So I could differentiate rather easily from afar my Phase I, Phase II and ARC clones. For the other clones, I will use jungle camo and urban camo...

But by doing that, I forbit myself to differentiate 2 phase I clone units by let's say paint one in blue and the other one in red...

Hope it helped.

Thank you for the advice! Unfortunately, Soratro uses an airbrush to get his battle droid and clone troopers prepped. As I said above, I don’t have the means to buy a airbrush but I don’t mind buying paint. I just don’t know how to get that nice white coating without an airbrush.

He explains what to use if you don't have an airbrush. I don't have one, and it worked really fine :) ! You just use Citadel sprays...

Oh, of course. I can’t believe I forgot about that. Thanks so much!

I used a very simple way to paint my Clone Troopers using a couple contrast paints and a few regular paints.

I based my Clones in Citadel Corax White (though plain white might work better for you. I wanted a slightly darker scheme for my clones), then I mixed an equal amount of Apothecary White contrast paint with the contrast medium and covered the whole model. I then mixed in some Spaxe Wolves Grey into my Apothecary white mixer, and darkened some parts of the armor that I felt needed some deeper shadows. Then I edge highlighted with some pure white.

It's incredibly easy! Here's my WIP Captain Rex for anyone interested.

Or you can coat in black, then spray from a bit further and with an angle of 45 degrees in Mechanicus Grey, and then spray from above in pure white. Then start painting from there ;) !

Decent white primer, paint in black areas, guns, markings then wash with 50/50 nuln oil / lahmain medium = job done!

Thanks so much everyone! I did go out and buy some nuln oil along with citadel spray paint. Thank you so much for the advice everyone! This is just a bridge I have never crossed and I didn’t want to go forward without a plan. Awesome Cpt. Rex @CaptMook !

I plan on posting some stuff I have done lately on my legion painting page and will post these clones when they are done!

Thanks again, Fort Defender
